Let's Talk About Mocap #7
Another edition of the one and only newsletter about the wonderful world of motion capture.
If you would like to know more about the background of this newsletter, please check out edition #1.
Let's Talk About Mocap #7 - April 2024
1️⃣ Post Performance Capture Pipeline by Mocappy
Simon Kay (DNEG, Sony Interactive, and Centroid Motion Capture) is a Mocap Guru and shares deep insights regularly on his Mocappy blog.
His latest blog dives into the post-mocap pipeline from selecting to editing and includes an infographic with the full pipeline overview.
2️⃣ AI Is Being Built on Dated, Flawed Motion-Capture Data
A recent article in IEEE Spectrum states that the underlying data of modern studies is based on 'typical' body types and cadavers. The statement comes from a pre-published study deep-diving into this matter.
“We dug into these so-called gold standards being used for all kinds of studies and designs, and many of them had errors or were focused on a very particular type of body”
3️⃣ GDScream
GDC happened and even though it was a great show, there was a huge frustration about the state of the game industry. To relieve this frustration there was an initiative to scream it off during the GDScream. The event was organized by Caryl Shaw (ex-Epic Games) and Scott Jon Siegel (Fortnite).
4️⃣ How to make stylized dynamic poses
This post by Chalermphol Wattanawongtrakool from Framestore caught my eye because these poses are brilliant, it's pure eye candy. His big question: What makes a good pose? He promised more details soon, I'm looking forward to seeing more of these awesome poses.

5️⃣ Tricking motion capture by Ace Ruele
Ace Ruele shared a post showing some tricking data he captured while recording for the game The Lords Of The Fallen. Stunt performer JJ Battell did an impressive combo move in the #Xsens suit and Ace shared the unedited, but HD Reprocessed data side-by-side with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character.
