The Life of an O-Life Summer HR Intern
We are currently recruiting our summer 2021 internships and have been busy promoting the program across social media and different events. But we all know the value of ambassadorship and employee advocacy, so who better to tell you about what it is like then from two interns themselves. As we will be recruiting various HR internships, we wanted to take you behind the scenes and hear from Jesper Engedahl and Thea Naustal who worked in Group HR within employer branding and recruitment.
This past summer we (Thea Naustdal and Jesper Arntzen Engedahl) undertook an eight-week internship in the HR-department at Orkla. We were two of 38 other university-level interns, all which were there to learn more about our position area and departments. In this article, we will share our experiences and our thoughts on the internship as a whole to give you a first person perspective of what it is really like to be an intern at Orkla. We will also discuss what you can expect from an Orkla Internship, what you should know before going into it, and how to be fully prepared.
Orkla’s internship program, newly branded as O-Life as of this year, took place across eight weeks in June-August 2020. The name is not the only thing that was new this year - almost the entire internship was done virtually. Most of the time we, and the rest of the interns, were reliant on digital tools to communicate with team members and managers when doing our jobs. It made for a different, unique experience, heavily focused on clear communication. We did, however, get to come to the office at certain times though, which gave us a sense of what it is like to be at Orkla HQ physically and to experience real interactions with our managers and other professionals in such a large company (there are over 18K employees at Orkla!).
In March when COVID 19 hit, we were all anxious of what would happen to our internship. Feeling uncertain about if we would be able to come into the office, see our coworkers and fellow interns, or even be able to do the internship at all. In early June, all the interns attended a virtual meeting with Orkla where we got the confirmation that our internship (or O-Life as it would now be called) would continue as usual, however this year it would be a largely virtual experience. This was exciting news for us as we would still all get to work at Orkla during the summer, albeit in a different experience than we first expected.
When we first started on the 22nd of June, the week was filled with virtual events, courses and information. To make us feel welcome, Orkla had arranged goodiebags with items such as personalized water bottles and other Orkla products. Along with the goodie bag, we received our laptops so that we could work from home. Onboarding to a new company is already a bit exhausting, but even more so when you are looking at the computer screen the entire day. However, the internship was not only about work, we also had a lot of fun social interactions, such as virtual bingo, mocktail mixing session with FUN light, a cooking session with the CEO of Naturli’ and virtual yoga.
All the 38 interns were spread across different business areas and departments across Orkla and we were all usually teamed up in groups of at least two. Having a partner was helpful, as it made it easier to discuss ideas, ask questions and further develop ourselves in the role as an Orkla Intern. If we were uncertain of something, we could always ask each other and we would brainstorm ideas around and find out together what was the best solution. This is an important part of the program as Orkla always strives to pair two interns together in one department so no one is on their own.
In addition to our individual assignments, all the interns were split up into cross-functional teams, combining interns from different departments and fields, and worked on a case project together throughout the summer. The case work was an excellent way of combining academic and professional expertise so that we together could come up with a solution to the case . It was also a great way to get to know more of our fellow interns, which was harder than usual due to the internship being mostly virtual.
And for our positions: We all got real life projects to work on throughout the internship and the majority of us held a presentation for managers and more senior employees to present our findings towards the end. One thing that differentiates this program from others is that we were given trust and accountability and were treated like regular employees of Orkla, not just students. This also meant that the work we did was both meaningful and useful for Orkla. An example of this was that we worked on Orkla’s upcoming Virtual Career Fair. We got to discuss potential ideas, interact with potential speakers, make questionnaires, and create a rough draft of the event. It was very exciting as this was not just "busy-work" for us as interns - but this event will actually take place (next week) and it feels great to have your ideas be actually be used for something greater. It also makes us feel that we accomplished something real and that Orkla values our work and our insights. It is exciting to have made our mark on something that Orkla will use in the future.
One of the highlights of our time here was the final dinner we organized at the end of the internship for all the interns. This was the first time that we were all together in person, which was special. It was so nice to finally see everyone together, having fun, as well as the relief of everything working out as we were solely responsible for the event. We had a fantastic three-course meal with cocktails, Jesper held a welcome speech and we had organized games and quizzes in teams throughout the evening.
Over the course of our eight weeks at Orkla, we gained a better understanding of Orkla as a company and the HR industry as a whole. Not only do we feel more professionally equipped for our future careers, but the internship has allowed us to grow personally and gain new skills in how we interact, behave and make our mark as people and employees. We have also met new and interesting people and learned valuable insights from professionals in their fields.
O-Life is an amazing opportunity to grow and learn, and maybe even kick-start your career. Several of the interns have already received offers for permanent positions at Orkla after they graduate, so Orkla can definitely become your future home to grow.
