Life Is About Your Loved Ones, Not Material Pursuits
JourneyNorth Podcast | Season 01 | EP 10
If you think about it, most of our actions are driven by, or taken for someone else.
Earning more money? So that your family can live a better life.
Working tirelessly? So that others can enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Chasing the "shiny objects"? So that you can prove your doubters wrong.
Yet, many people don't uncover the real value of life, that ultimately, it is your loved ones that truly matter. In this episode, we dive deeper into how your family and loved ones can serve as your bedrock for success. The guest for this episode, Leza, had been through bankruptcy and emerged stronger to become the CEO of a beauty tech company that operates in more than 10 countries today.
Who Is Leza Klenk?
Leza is currently the CEO of Spendless Group, a company made up of three verticals in the education tech space, beauty tech and an advertising and marketing agency. Leza is an award winning entrepreneur, a personal branding coach, and a sought-after speaker, having spoken at more than 100 events on entrepreneurship, trade equity financing and personal branding in more than six countries.
Leza has amassed more than 100,000 followers on LinkedIn and won the title of Singapore Youngest Business Guru at 28. In 2019, she bagged the award of Asia's Greatest CEO for 2018 awarded by Asia One and URS International.
Life Is Not Attached To Materials
Having been through bankruptcy and now enjoying the success that she has, one of Leza's biggest realisations is that life is not all about your material gains.
Life is just about gaining wisdom, building relationships and knowing that you still have people you love. You have health among the people you love, no one's dying, my kids are not sick.
These are actually the real value of life.
LEZA KLENK, CEO OF SPENDLESS GROUP
At the end of the day, earning a good income is secondary. What matters most is the people you love and their well-being.
With that perspective in mind, Leza is able to detach from material pursuits and focus on deriving the value and lessons behind each experience or setback.
Who Is Your Best Driver of Motivation & Support?
For most, Leza and myself included, family is the best driver of motivation and support for us. With the knowledge that no matter how bad things go, you will still have a supportive family greeting you with smiles at the end of the day, helps to drive you forward.
Beyond your family, you can look to other people whom you might be working hard for as well. It could be your significant other, a close friend or whoever you care most about. Most of the time, we're not working hard simply for ourselves. Find that source of motivation that grounds you and is able to provide you with the support you need to constantly push forward.
Your Personal Brand Is Your Asset
Having started with little business experience and not much connections, Leza had to build her network and knowledge from scratch. In order to make herself stand out, she committed to establishing her own personal brand, specifically on LinkedIn.
By doing so, she has managed to attract investors, employees and many other opportunities. Here are some tips she gave regarding personal branding:
- Engagement and social media is a two-way street. You have to post valuable content, while supporting the content of others as well
- Comment on trending posts to reach a wider audience
- Use keywords so that people will associate you with your intended message
Personal Reflection
Leza's message about how her family is her main source of motivation really resonated with me. What she mentioned regarding the pursuit for material gains is food for thought as well. I think in our society today, we're too caught up in trying to achieve more and more, without considering what it is that actually matters most to us.
We should also be more grateful for what we have and cherish the time with our loved ones too. As what Leza mentioned, when you're at your deathbed, you won't be thinking about your achievements or the amount of money you made. It's the connections you have with your family and the ones you love that truly matters.
