How To Discover Your Unique Leadership Approach
JourneyNorth Podcast | Season 01 | EP 03
Are you in a position of power? Do you have a team under you that looks to you for guidance? Or are you about to take on a leadership role and have no idea how you can be a good leader?
In this episode, Daniel dispels the misconceptions of leadership and talks about how people can become great leaders of their own rights.
Who Is Daniel Lee?
Daniel is a partner at First Time Leadership, where he helps First Time Leaders to lead successfully by enabling them to shift from an employee mentality to a leader mindset.
Despite working in the corporate world for many years, Daniel struggled to understand the meaning of leadership and how he could become a good leader when he first had to take on a leadership position. That sparked his journey to uncover the concept of leadership.
Leadership is simply bringing others to their success.

A Leader’s Mindset: Your Words, Actions & Decisions
Daniel brought us through what it means to possess a leader’s mindset. Simply put, it is your words, actions and decisions, and how they can bring others to success.
As a leader, you are under the spotlight. The words you say, the actions you do, and the decisions you make would impact the people around or under you. It is important that you commit to contributing to the success of the people around you, instead of focusing solely on yourself.
Consistency is paramount as well, so that people will know what they can expect from you. No one wants to work with someone who they can’t decipher what their next actions will be when they approach them.
Misconceptions Around Leadership
We touched on multiple misconceptions throughout the interview, but these three insights were the ones that stuck with me the most:
- Don’t be tempted to fill the void when there is silence and fall in love with your own voice
- Leaders don’t have to know all the answers, be willing to accept inputs from the team
- All of us are born to lead
We all have the capability to lead. However, the ability to lead needs to be refined.

Finding Your Unique Leadership Approach
In order to be an effective leader, you have to craft your own leadership approach so that you can lead in a way that is consistent with who you are. Daniel talked about the three areas that you can look at to determine that sweet spot:
- Your Values
- Your Strengths
- Your Personality
By identifying the values that are important to you, the strengths that you boast, and your personality, you will be able to develop your unique leadership style.
