Brazil is now able to export used cooking oil to the U.S.

The Brazilian government has received approval from the United States to accept the International Plant Health Certificate (CSIV) for the export of used cooking oil (UCO) from Brazil.

UCO, a byproduct of vegetable oils and fats used in kitchens and the food industry, serves as a raw material for biofuels, including biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel.

Market opportunities

  • Demand: In 2023, the U.S. imported approximately 1.4 million metric tons of UCO, enough to produce 2.27 billion liters of biofuels.
  • Value: The total import value of UCO to the U.S. was about USD 1.66 billion.
  • Suppliers: The main suppliers were China, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile.

This is the second market access granted by the U.S. for Brazilian agricultural products this year, following the January authorization for animal-origin gelatin and collagen exports. Last year, Brazil's agribusiness sales to the U.S. exceeded USD 9.82 billion, making the U.S. Brazil's second-largest trading partner.

With this new market access, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 146th commercial expansion in 51 countries since last year. In 2024 alone, 68 new markets have been accessed in 29 countries. [Full article]

Approval for pork fat and processed proteins exports to South Korea

The Brazilian government has received South Korea's decision to accept the International Health Certificate (CSI) for the export of pork fat and processed proteins intended for animal feed. This approval is the third market access granted to Brazilian agricultural products in South Korea this year.

Previous approvals

  • April 2024: South Korea authorized the export of animal by-products, including poultry meal and fat, and ten types of shrimp-based products.

Market impact

This new market access addresses the demands of the Brazilian Renderers Association (ABRA) and South Korean importers, anticipating growth in the Korean feed industry to support the increasing number of domestic animals in Asia. In 2023, South Korea was the eighth largest destination for Brazilian agricultural exports, with a total value exceeding USD 3.37 billion.

With this latest market access, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 145th commercial expansion in 51 countries since the beginning of last year. In 2024 alone, 67 new markets have been accessed in 29 countries. [Full article]

Mercosur Origin Regime (ROM) changes to facilitate trade

Starting July 18th, the Mercosur Origin Regime (ROM) will undergo significant changes to simplify intra-bloc trade. Key changes include ending the mandatory Certificate of Origin (CO) for exports within Mercosur, allowing "self-declaration of origin" to reduce bureaucracy and costs.

Customs can now make direct inquiries to producers or exporters, speeding up the process. The foreign component limit for products will increase from 40% to 45%.

Additionally, Brazilian products can be exported from a customs facility in a third country, improving logistics. These measures aim to lower costs and enhance competitiveness, benefiting businesses in the region. [Full article]
