Mark 6:7-13

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick— no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Did you know that Anyone can cast out unclean spirits, demons, etc.? You don’t have to be theologically-trained and/or ordained. Mark’s Gospel here is speaking to all of us – not just to Jesus’ Disciples in the Bible. His call transcends time and dimensions. All you have to do to have the ability to “cast-out” darkness is to accept Jesus in your heart and allow Him to live in you. Jesus granted us the Eternal Authority of God when He died on the cross and then walked-out of the tomb. The problem for most folks on this point is that they don’t Believe that they have this Power, too. Jesus is constantly reminding us (through the Scriptures and life’s experiences) to simply Listen, Trust, and Obey Him. Darkness has no authority over us since we have all been washed in the Blood of Jesus Christ. The only authority that darkness has over us is that which we give it. Now, the key, here again, is that we need Christ to have this Authority through His love, grace, and mercy. We are to rest in Jesus and keep moving forward – not letting the darkness find a home in us. The moment that we start to really listen to the “smack-talk” of darkness, we are already off of our game. Shut it out of your life. Move forward. Fill yourself with so much love that there isn’t any room left for the darkness. Many times, the heroes in our lives are those who kept the Faith and continued moving forward against the headwinds of the world. They didn’t listen to the darkness or drink too much from its venom. Darkness has no hold on us and it has no place in the Holy Temple of God that we all are (1 Corinthians 3:16). So, kick it out and stop listening to it when it calls again. And, ask God regularly for help and listen to the Truth that is found in God’s Word. It is when we truly-live under God’s Authority alone that we rest peacefully in Him.
