Make a list? Check it twice? 2025 goals and HOW to set them...

It's that time of year again!

2025 is fast approaching and we're all starting to think about our BIG goals for next year.

Here’s the thing about BIG goals: they’re easy to set, but tricky to hit.

Doubling your rep's sales quotas isn't going to work.

No matter how many cold calls you make them do. 🫠

In fact, 50% of the people we polled this week said they weren't even going to hit their Q4 target:

That’s why, in 2025, we need to flip the script on how we set goals.

We can't expect salespeople to write a list and cross their fingers. 🤞

Instead they have to:

  • Get strategic
  • Stay accountable
  • Keep it real

That's exactly what MySalesCoach customers, who have access to a huge range of industry experts, will be doing in 2025.

This week I'm calling upon one of our most experienced coaches, Steve Myers CISM .

He's been a coach for almost 18 years and shared on LinkedIn this week that he'd recently helped a coachee close a 500k deal. 💷

Steve, and he won't mind me saying this, is really straight talking and doesn't stand for any nonsense.

Which is why I HAD to bring him into this week's article to give his brilliant insights into how we can all achieve our goals in 2025.

Tom Boston : What is the best way to set actionable goals for 2025?

Steve Myers CISM : Think both short term and long term.

Make your goals super specific and set hard timescales. Break the long term goals down into sub goals and set a hard timescales for each.

Make sure you have a deep emotionally compelling reason for each goal.

Life isn’t just about work.

Think about your goals outside of work.

Your family, your health, your education even your hobbies.

Tom Boston : We know that new year goals often don’t make it past February. Where do most people go wrong?

Steve Myers CISM : Most goals fail for three reasons.

  1. They’re not real goals - they’re just wishes.
  2. Goals are reviewed only annually or at best a few times a year. The biggest reason for salespeople losing their mojo is they lose sight the connection between what they need to TODAY and their long term goal.
  3. They do goal setting but that’s it.

A goal without a plan for its realisation never makes it past the vision board.

Tom Boston : What effect does coaching have on goal setting?

Steve Myers CISM : Coaching is integral to achieving any goal if that goal requires you to operate outside of your comfort zone in any way.

Humans don’t like being out of our comfort zones.

The ultimate role of a coach is to support our clients in getting out and staying out of their comfort zones.

To put it another way, to act in our own long term best interest even when we really don’t want to do the short term thing that will move us closer to our goal.
