6. Before I go

Hello sister!

The sun shone all day yesterday and so Summer is here as far as I’m concerned. Just managed to resist flinging myself onto an oversized bean bag in the middle of the lawn because it was blowing a hoolie but, I did get to wear my sunglasses while driving to my mum’s!

1. This Week

Not sure if you know but, LinkedIn tells newsletter authors like me, b**ger all about their subscribers other than broad demographics such as job title, industry and location. That’s pretty much it. So in an effort to tailor the 'Sisters in Success' newsletter to include all my loyal and lovely sisters, I’m going to include the occasional special feature, like this one. But before we dive in, a special message for what LinkedIn tells me are my three largest subscriber groups…

Dear Lawyer sister

You are among the largest group of this newsletter’s subscribers, and so this edition is my way of saying 'thank you'. I hope it inspires you to master the three Key AI Tasks that I keep banging on about and if you want to know whether you will be promoted to partner take the AI Mastery challenge and get your personalised report.

Dear HR professional sister

If you have abandoned the greasy pole in favour of setting up your own business I recommend hopping over to Sam Eaton’s page where you will find straight talking support and a new group kicking off today as it’s the 1st of May.

Dear Exec sister

Having a clear vision for how we can leverage AI in our leadership roles is crucial for staying ahead in today's fast-paced world. I'm not sure if you are ready to take the next step and incorporate AI into your leadership approach but I'd love to find out. Your answers will help to inform my advocacy for women's rights. Test your knowledge and readiness with this 1 minute quiz and help me understand where female, SME leaders are in their AI journey. There’s a free 'AI Governance: Ready-to-Go-Plan' to say thank you…

2. Promotion: Female v Male lawyers

My Question / Prompt:

Is there an imbalance between the number of women entering the legal profession at UK law firms and the number being promoted to partner in comparison to their male colleagues?

Perplexity’s answer/ Response:

Yes, there is a significant imbalance between the number of women entering the legal profession at UK firms and the number being promoted to partner in comparison to their male colleagues. The sources provided offer several key insights into this issue:

1. Entry vs. Senior Level Representation: While women have been entering the legal profession in greater numbers than men for over two decades, their representation significantly diminishes at the partner level. For instance, women comprised 57% of trainee solicitors and associates, yet only 24% of law firm partners. This disparity is even more pronounced in the five magic circle firms, where women make up only 19% of partners[5].

2. Long-term Trends: The gender gap at more senior levels is a long-standing issue, with more than 40% of male solicitors becoming partners compared to less than 20% of women. This trend suggests that women in law firms are not achieving parity with men at senior partnership levels, with projections indicating that it might not be until 2037 before gender parity is achieved at this level[5].

3. Attrition Rates: A significant factor contributing to this imbalance is the high attrition rate among female solicitors, with around a third leaving the profession between five and ten years after qualifying and not returning. This attrition rate impacts the pool of women available for promotion to top positions[6].

4. Barriers to Progression: Several barriers to women's progression in law firms have been identified, including a lack of mentorship, opportunities for advancement, and the impact of gender stereotypes. Additionally, the legal profession's culture, including billable hours targets and the partnership model, has been cited as not being designed to be inclusive or to value equality, further disadvantaging women[1][2][6].

5. Efforts to Address the Imbalance: Despite efforts to improve gender equality in the legal profession, including mentoring programs and initiatives to promote flexible working, progress has been slow. Some firms have failed to meet their self-imposed diversity targets, and the profession as a whole is doing little to change the working cultures that cause attrition among women[2][5].

In summary, the data and analysis provided in the sources clearly indicate a significant imbalance in the progression of women to partner roles within UK law firms, highlighting the need for continued and focused efforts to address this disparity.

3.  Representation: Female Law Partners

Female partner? What female partner?

My prompt: I want statistics about female law partners in UK firms

Perplexity’s response: Here are the key statistics about female lawyer partners in UK firms based on the provided sources:

1. Overall Representation: Women make up 37% of law firm partners in the UK, according to the latest figures from the Solicitors Regulation Authority[4].

2. Equity Partners: The proportion of women who are equity partners is lower, with 32% of equity partners across all firms being women[6]. This figure is up from 28% in previous years, indicating some progress[6].

3. Large vs. Mid-Tier Firms: Among the largest UK-based law firms, women equity partners are less well represented compared to their international and mid-tier counterparts. On average, women make up 22% of the equity partnership in these large firms[5].

4. Top Firms for Female Equity Partners: Specific firms have been highlighted for their higher percentages of female equity partners. For example, Linklaters has a female partnership rate of 41%[1]. DLA Piper aims to increase its female partnership from 21% to 30% over the next four years, with a further goal of reaching 40% by 2030[1].

5. Disparities in Pay: There is also a notable pay disparity among partners, with female partners at some firms earning significantly less than their male counterparts. For instance, at US firm Latham & Watkins, female partners earned 24% less per hour on average in 2022[7].

These statistics illustrate the ongoing challenges and gradual improvements in gender equity among law firm partners in the UK.

4.  Opportunity: AI Mastery and ITS Impact on YOUR Promotion

Orchestrate your career development.

However, in my opinion the AI era will have a huge impact on the numbers as one of these three things happens -

Either:

  1. Women will master AI and rise to the top more quickly than predicted, or
  2. Women won’t master AI and will not achieve parity with men at senior partnership levels, (full stop) or
  3. Something else will happen (Donald Rumsfeld’s third option)

The $60 million question -

My question: Will it make a difference to the female lawyer’s chance of making partner in a UK law firm if they master AI governance, AI upskilling and AI strategy and become more resilient?

Perplexity’s response:

Mastering AI governance, AI upskilling, and AI strategy, along with enhancing resilience, could significantly impact a female lawyer's chances of making partner in a UK law firm. Here’s how these factors interplay:

1. AI Governance and Upskilling: As AI continues to transform the legal industry, proficiency in AI-related skills is becoming increasingly important. Law firms are integrating AI into various processes, from document analysis to contract management[8][13]. Lawyers who are adept at AI governance and upskilling not only position themselves as indispensable but also demonstrate forward-thinking and adaptability—traits valued in leadership roles. This expertise can set them apart in a competitive environment where traditional roles are being redefined by technology[6][10].

2. AI Strategy: Developing and implementing AI strategies involves understanding both the technological and business implications of AI in law. This includes assessing how AI can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve client services. Female lawyers who lead in this area can showcase their strategic thinking and business acumen, aligning with the qualities sought in partners[10][13].

3. Resilience: The legal profession, known for its high demands and stress levels, places a premium on resilience. Female lawyers who cultivate resilience can better manage the pressures of high-stakes environments and leadership roles. Resilience also supports long-term career sustainability, helping lawyers navigate setbacks and maintain their trajectory towards partnership[1][2][5].

4. Cultural and Structural Changes: Law firms are increasingly recognizing the need for diversity in leadership and are implementing policies to support this. Women who are proficient in AI and demonstrate resilience are likely to benefit from these changes, as firms look to promote leaders who reflect a modern, technologically adept, and resilient workforce[4][16].

In conclusion, for female lawyers in UK law firms, mastering AI-related skills and resilience could indeed enhance their chances of making partner. These competencies align with the evolving needs of law firms in the digital age and the leadership qualities that are increasingly in demand.
