"Urgent." "Fast-paced." "Accelerated."

Have you noticed terms like these becoming increasingly common at work? I know I have. For managers specifically, that means they're often navigating a sea of pressure-filled situations and responsibilities. And amid this whirlwind, they can sometimes overlook the diligent efforts and standout accomplishments of their team members.

So how do you prevent your achievements from fading into the background noise or being eclipsed by the latest urgency? By being your own best advocate and ensuring your boss stays in the loop about the stellar work you’re doing.

Sure, recognizing your own achievements is essential — go on and give yourself that pat on the back! — but keeping them to yourself is not enough. This could result in being overlooked for promotions, missing out on important learning opportunity, or not being considered for career-advancing, plum projects.

That’s why I've outlined 3 straightforward strategies for regularly communicating your successes effectively:

Quick Confidence Tips to Ensure Your Shine Isn't Overlooked:

  1. Interpersonal: Implement the "Flash Update" Method. Regularly drop a concise email to your manager highlighting recent accomplishments. It could be as simple as, "Thrilled to report that we've exceeded this month's sales target!" or "I'm glad to share that X project is coming along nicely and will be delivered on time and on budget." You can also convey positive feedback from a client or internal partner. This isn’t about flooding your manager’s inbox with emails, but about strategically sharing moments of success. Who doesn’t like receiving good news?
  2. Embodied: Hold a knowledge-sharing session. Initiate a casual yet informative session where you can share your learning with colleagues. Whether that's from a conference or training you attended, research you've been gathering or lessons learned from a project you've recently completed, it can add value. This not only positions you as a thought leader but also subtly underscores the quality of your learning and work. These sessions can be bi-monthly or even quarterly, ensuring a regular cadence of showcasing your value while fostering team collaboration.
  3. Mindset: Keep a reflection tracker. Dedicate a specific time each week or month to reflect on your successes and wins and keep them in one place. Use this time to identify patterns, growth areas, and standout moments. This ritual isn’t just about understanding your evolution, it's about being prepared to discuss it with clarity. If - for example - it says in your reflection tracker that you "Won repeat business with ABC Company on October 1" or "Developed an efficiency to deal with XYZ problem," you can use those examples at check-ins, reviews, and growth conversations with your manager.

Showcasing your achievements isn't about bragging — it's about rightfully acknowledging the value you bring to the table. By making it a regular practice, you not only cement your position but inspire others to recognize and celebrate their own success stories.

Consistency is key here; you deserve more than just the occasional mention if you’re doing outstanding work.

I’d love to hear about your proud moments: what’s one achievement from your week you'd like to share in the comments. Let’s inspire one another to shine!
