Managers, it’s high time to change your style!
Managers, it’s high time to change your style!
The whole world is going through a tough situation our generation has ever faced, a time of huge multifaceted changes. Change in concepts, change in methodologies, change in beliefs, practices, strategies, workstyle, management style etc etc.
Though the subject is vast, I would like to address significant changes needed in TWO Management styles which are commonly existing in many organizations.
- Uninstall Traditional Management style in companies
Irrespective of region, country or type of business line, several organizations are trapped in Traditional management style. These organizations possess managers (considered as loyal to the stakeholder families) serving for three more decades, which is to be respected. At the same time, if we look more deeply, we find that they are executing a management style that they started 30 years ago which is obsolete now (Eg: Unnecessary paper works, processes, reporting methods, meeting methodologies, belief that people shall be personally present near them to present any opinion etc….list can be long).
This cannot be existing any more at this time. Stakeholders or Business owners shall take a closer look at their management team and take necessary steps to uninstall the traditional management styles from the management team. This change of culture is highly necessary for facing the current challenges and for sailing the ship successfully to the shore.
2. Stop Micro Management
Another management style that hinders or will no longer function is Micro management.
Who is a micro manager ? Though no one will ever admit himself or herself as micromanager, it is a fact that many organizations suffer with this management disease.
Micro manager is the one who believes that he shall be involved in every bits and pieces of the decision makings, tasks, discussions, problem solving etc. Such managers believe that if they don’t decide how a printout should look like, the company may fall. So they squeeze their subordinates and spoils their valuable time, blocks their thinking power, make them feel that they are no more important other than “just work and get your salary”.
This will no more work if companies are going “online” in their operations be it business or administration. Employees shall get freedom to propose their ideas, execute new strategies, try new methods and at the same time get appreciated for their success in new practices. They shall feel the effect of team work and this will create enthusiasm and ownership feeling which is very necessary for success at this crucial time.
So let us all wakeup and have self review about our management styles.
Let us respect Change Management with us first, and then with our subordinates.
Best of luck!
