A simple key to success

Recently, I came across a situation where a new job was offered to an employee. But within no time, the job was refused, saying that it is a job for beginners. Yes, everyone has the right to respond. That employee is just a representative of all of us.

Let us see another scenario. We often face questions like “What is your job title?, What title did they offer you ? … “.  For our replies we get comments like, “Oh, that’s only No.2 in the organization  levels … Oh that’s a primary level job ……etc ”. You very well know what I mean.

Now comes my next question to you as I know how much influence others can bet on you. What happens with you on these opinions?  You try to fit yourself into the box defined by others. You try to shrink yourself to a small shell defined by others. 

Ladies and gentlemen, if that was the case, I would not be what I am now. I have gone through many jobs which was defined as “small jobs” by my colleagues. But I never allowed the title to shrink me.

There is a saying, “Provide more service, you will get paid for it” !

For example, let me come back to the starting example of ‘job of the beginners’. Assume it is the job of welcoming customers. You can either shrink your job in saying “Hello, Welcome etc” and just leave the customer believing that you have done your job OR feel the ownership by walking an extra mile with the customer, asking more questions, helping them to meet their needs, be part of their solutions etc etc. In other words, you can be an active part of the show by giving a small twist to the task. Next time, when the customer comes, they will search for you for higher tasks than welcoming, because you already have proven that you can do much more.

So my humble advice is when any job is assigned to you :

• Review the standard definition of the job description and give an enhanced and wide definition by yourself.
• Give extra edges for the tasks and objectives.
• Give an extra meaning to the title by yourself.
• Prove that there is another simple and effective method to do any task.

Then you are creating a new brand in job and you are the brand ambassador! Then you are already in your journey towards your dream job. Believe me, you will never repent if you do so.

NB: Computers and mobile phones have all the varieties that we enjoy today from such enhanced definitions done by great people. Otherwise the whole world would have been using the same old computer even today.
