The Real Model Of Church Discipline

Special Message, After Next Sunday’s Martyrdom Of St. James Remembrance, We will be taking our First Vacation since we started the Postings in 2014, It will be at least two weeks, and could extend through to the beginning of September.

This is thankfully not health related but as I work a full time job to support the Ministry, just a break both my wife and need to get some rest.

Thank you all in Christ for your Understanding, we have pages of Lessons on our Webpage should wish to enjoy those.

Our Lesson perhaps will be different from the way your Understanding of Church Discipline has been practiced in your Church over the years, as the Paramount goal is still restoration and forgiveness.

As we have seen the section is sandwiched as a sliver between two huge sections of the LORD’S Standard of Forgiveness, so this section can not be treated as a novel thought, but to be prosecuted with this mind-blowing standard of forgiveness in mind. It also might suggest, that the bringing of charges must be carefully weighed, as Church Discipline is still very important.

I hope this lesson refreshes your understanding through the HOLY SPIRIT alone

First Reading

Psalm 51

1 ¶ <<For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.>> Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.

4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.

5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.

6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

7 ¶ Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.

14 ¶ Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.

16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

18 By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

The LORD’S Prayer & Apostles Creed

Matthew 6:9 ¶ And Jesus said "In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Christian What Do You Believe?

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Catholic Church; (this is the Holy World Wide Church of Jesus Christ and not singled out to the Roman Catholic Church) The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Second Reading

Matthew 18

1 ¶ At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"  2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,  3 and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.  4 "Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  5 "And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;  6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.  7 ¶ "Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!  8 "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire.  9 "If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.  10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.  11 "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.  12 "What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?  13 "If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.  14 "So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.  15 ¶ "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.  16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.  17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.  18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.  19 "Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.  20 "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."  21 ¶ Then Peter came and said to Him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"  22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.  23 "For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.  24 "When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.  25 "But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.  26 "So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.'  27 "And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.  28 "But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, 'Pay back what you owe.'  29 "So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you.'  30 "But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.  31 "So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened.  32 "Then summoning him, his lord said to him, 'You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.  33 'Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?'  34 "And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.  35 "My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart." Lesson Text

Matthew 18:11-22

1: Thoughts On Church Discipline?

As someone who spent 23 years in an Orthodox Presbyterian Church that “Practiced” Church Discipline, I was under the impression that I actually understood Church Discipline as laid out in Matthew 18.

You see, each step was followed “Biblically”, I also want to admit that it was followed as written in the fragmented passage.

I also want to make clear, I am NOT instructing anyone that Church Discipline should not be practiced, and it has its valuable place, but it also needs to be followed, NOT as a Fractured Passage, but in the Full Context Jesus presents it in.

This is the reason I have bracketed our lesson starting at verse 11 and finishing at verse 22 as Jesus is not starting a portion that should have ever been fragmented, but viewed as should the Gospel as the whole text.

As we have seen previously, the fragmented use of Bible Passages, is why we have a section on our Webpage dedicated to the fractured use of passages called “Fracture Fairey Tales”.

It is this dangerous practice that I really believe invented the Different Denominations.

Here is a few examples:

A: The Seventh Day Adventist Exodus 20:9–12 (NASB95):  9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

Never taking the full context into consideration that the actual Seventh Day moved based on Festival Days, nor can they square the Apostles and Jesus walking through a field eating grain on the Sabbath, and healing as alright to do.

B: The Baptist

Never take into consideration the Acts 16 Family Baptism Account, and Paul’s account 1st Corinthians 11-20 of Baptizing Stephanas and His Family as Family Baptism IS IN THE New Testament.

C: The Church Of Ladder Day Saints

Psalm 82 “You are gods, you are sons of the Most High.

Again not squaring the rest of the Biblical account that there truly are NONE Righteous

D: The Armiiniast (This included the Bulk of Denominations IE: Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, Jewish Faith, Muslim and other world faiths)

2: What You Have Seen As Church Discipline?

In my case, I saw the Text of Matthew 18 Applied as written in Verses 15-19, and believe me it is a painful, and nearly a year to carefully apply.

Now it is very Important that we remember, what is about to be said does NOT suggest abandoning Church Discipline, but instead correctly understanding the full context, and admitting I have never seen this applied correctly.

I also need to be honest, as I too thought what I had witnessed, was the correct process, and only reading through Matthew has proven how wrong I was!

We will see this in the next point, but for now let us remember that this is process took nearly a year, and when Judgement was passed, the person excommunicated and treated like a Heathen and a Tax Collector.

3: What The Context Actually Tells Us About Church Discipline?

It tells us bluntly that Restoration and Forgiveness, at the LORD’S Standard is the ultimate goal, and not at the point of the one straying groveling to return.

Jesus eats with whom, and it must help us to understand the Context, and it is a call to witness, not a call to completely shun.

Sure, the relationship is different as the individual is no longer embraced as a fellow member, but is now the one who strayed and we leave the 99 to rescue.

This passage is JUST before the Discipline account, and yet seems not to be contextually treated in the Discipline I have witnessed; 11 "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.

And remember Jesus explains how we are to treat the one who has not returned “treated like a Heathen and a Tax Collector.” And just how did Jesus treat them?

Mt 9:9 ¶ As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector's booth; and He *said to him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him.

10 Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples.

11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?"

12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.

The balancing act between the proper Discipline, as Churches ARE NOT Clubs, but Bodies of Believers must always side the Restoring, a pursuit of the lost one.

I do hope this has help to clear up Church Discipline, it really has for me.

One final thought, as we pursue the lost one, please don’t attempt it by yourself as Jesus Gives the proper example “Mark 6:7 ¶ And He *summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

Always go in pairs

The Feast Of Our LORD

1st Corinthians 11:23 ¶ For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
