Maximize the outcomes of your MBA Journey Ft. Santosh Mishra, IIM Alumnus
The MBA admissions season is heating up, and there's a lot of discussion around what to do and what not to do in B-School to get maximum ROI out of your MBA journey. Getting into Business School is a tough journey with exams, a highly competitive environment, and an interview process, but it's crucial to keep that effort intact to get out of B-School in flying colors and prove that you're worth it.
To ensure success, there are a few aspects of MBA that everyone should consider. While it's important to focus on placement and good ROI in terms of CTC, following an outcome-based approach can lead to extra pressure and sometimes doesn't yield the desired result. Instead, focusing on the process or journey makes achieving the outcome much easier.
Academics
CGPA matters or doesn’t matter is a long-debated topic, but academics do matter. Case studies taught and the lessons from them do help in career as well as understanding various aspects of the company and business environment in the future. Whether it's how Nestle saved itself from the Maggi crisis or how AMUL became an empire with 7 Billion Dollar revenue, the learnings will always help build a manager for the future.
Clubs and Committees
Student entities are an integral part of B-Schools and give you additional opportunities to learn and explore. Whether it's the placement committee that helps you network with leading industry professionals or the public relations team to build the brand of the B-School and network with top media houses. There might be some disagreement on whether and how much you should invest your precious time in this, but one should always take up such opportunities to understand the principles of teamwork and work in a collaborative environment.
Competitions
Participating in hundreds of competitions by top multinationals can help you learn more about the industry and companies, ultimately helping you in your career. You can grab cash prizes, PPO/PPI opportunities at top brands, and many more. I know B School graduates getting multiple offers due to competitions and better offer than the campus ones. Live Projects
Live projects can be very beneficial for MBA students. Live projects are real-world projects that students undertake during their studies, which involve working with real companies or organizations. It helps in enhancing practical skills, building professional networks, gaining industry knowledge, as well as increasing the chances of better placement outcomes.
Peers/Friends
Peers and friends can play a significant role in an MBA student's journey, both personally and professionally, by providing peer learning and much-needed emotional support during high-pressure situations like placement and exams. MBA students often work on group projects, and peers and friends can provide valuable feedback and hold each other accountable for meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work.
Placement
To achieve the best placement outcomes, it's essential to prioritize this aspect and dedicate oneself entirely to it. To gain a better understanding of companies, reading job descriptions and putting in maximum effort in every attempt is crucial. While competing with batchmates is inevitable, it's more crucial to compete with oneself and strive to be the best version possible. Therefore, one should leave no stone unturned to maximize their potential in this area.
