The Meaning Behind Metrics

A common ancronym is KPI = Key Performance Indicators. However, genius CEO Steven Bartlett uses OKR's = Objectives and Key Results.

Whilst it's importance to track metrics for any business, in my humble opinion, it's more important to identify the meaning behind the metrics.

Why do I say this?

You get what you measure. If you measure the wrong thing in your business, then you are unlikely to make progress in the areas which matter.

For example, if you measure hours worked you won't necessarily see high quality work.

In the #legalprofession and #accountancy practices across the world #leadership mostly all measure hours worked and the ratio to billable hours.

Just because some professionals work long hours and bill high numbers, doesn't automatically mean that their work is of good quality nor does it measure the impact on the #health of the employee.

More useful metrics might be to track client satisfaction levels, the level of sickness for each lawyer, and individual lawyer happiness and achievement levels.

Review your internal and external metrics from time to time and note what a few simple changes could bring to your culture and profits.
