Meet Linda Blanchette: The Entrepreneur Shaping a Sustainable Future in Fashion

The fashion industry, while a driving force in global commerce, is also a significant contributor to the climate change crisis. In response to growing concerns about sustainability, entrepreneurs like Linda Blanchette, founder of Consciously Clothed, are challenging the status quo. Partnering with The Weave, Linda has transformed her second-hand clothing business into an award-winning venture, demonstrating that conscious consumption and innovative business models can lead to a more sustainable future in fashion.

Fashion Industry Background: Fighting Fast Fashion…

Fast fashion is one of the most polluting industries globally, contributing to 8-10% of global CO2 emissions—more than aviation and shipping combined. The industry's linear system, which encourages overproduction, leads to excessive waste, with most clothing discarded after just two years of wear. This system also heavily consumes resources like water and energy, further exacerbating environmental issues. The rise of fast fashion has massively accelerated climate change. A simple yet impactful solution is to buy less or adopt a circular business model, where clothes are reused, repaired, and resold rather than discarded.

Working with The Weave...

The Weave collaborates with Linda Blanchette , founder of Consciously Clothed, a second-hand and pop-up store offering preloved clothing in Wivenhoe. Linda started her business after being inspired whilst taking part in Climate Assembly UK in Birmingham, which brought together 108 people from all walks of life and all shades of opinion to discuss how the UK should meet net zero by 2050. Linda had never imagined herself running a business, and taking on the many roles of a business owner was challenging. However, with The Weave’s help, she was able to grow her business from its inception to being shortlisted in the Retail Entrepreneur of the Year category in the East of England, at the 2024 Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

Being part of The Weave community provided Linda with the opportunity to join a dynamic group. Working with a mentor like James Cracknell MSc SysPrac (Open) sparked new ideas and provided the push she needed to move her business forward. Linda reflects, "Working with James gave me a lot of thoughts and ideas. It gave me that extra push, knowing what to do next was crucial for the growth of my business." She is especially grateful for participating in the 60-Second Pitch event, which helped her practice public speaking, step out of her comfort zone, and gain confidence for pitching the business in front of wider audiences.

The networking opportunities provided by The Weave, such as events like People, Planet, Pint, and being part of the supportive community, made a significant difference. Linda also benefited from resources like the Interwoven podcast and the extensive resource library available on the platform. "Going through the Business Model Canvas and Customer Persona with James helped me further develop my business idea. The community introduced me to supportive new business owners, expanded my network, and led to new friendships, which has been wonderful."

Mentoring with James was invaluable for Linda. His expertise, guidance, and support kept her motivated through the challenges of running a business. "I've worked so hard for three years, and I'm not prepared to give up. I've always been a hard worker, and I've put so much into my business that I will continue to push forward. When things get tricky, it's important to have support."

Linda’s business has evolved significantly since completing the OKR program, which focuses on objectives and key results. "Before OKRs, I was just working without thinking ahead. Now I have plans for the future. I'm building an ecosystem that goes beyond clothing, including sustainable accessories and potentially launching repair workshops with free advice on what to wear. I’m even considering opening another branch. Things are moving in the right direction—there are more products in the shop, and demand is growing for Consciously Clothed. We’ve created a relaxed environment where everything is easy to find, and we even offer free tea and coffee."

Advice for Entrepreneurs Considering The Weave Community…

"Being part of The Weave, you find your tribe—people you connect with, who share your values, and who can help each other. It's crucial to have someone who understands your journey. You can’t do it on your own. James brought ideas I wouldn’t have thought of and helped solve problems I couldn’t have tackled by myself. Talking to someone who is also in business leads you down a more positive path. The connections, insights, and opportunities I gained from The Weave have been invaluable. I’ve grown my network, made great friends, and recommend it to anyone looking to build meaningful relationships."

"When you’re wearing all the hats, it’s easy to get stuck. The guidance I received from James, especially through the OKR program, was crucial in moving my business in the right direction. It's important to work on your business, not just in it. Setting time aside to focus on the bigger picture rather than getting bogged down in the day-to-day is key to making lasting changes and keeping your vision clear, which was made possible through collaboration with The Weave."
