Meet our Partners - Farah Syed

One of the best known residential property lawyers in London, loved for her collaborative approach and personal touch, Farah Islam-Syed is a Partner and Head of Residential Property at Laurus

  • Why did you choose to specialise in residential property?

Property Law found me, when studying I found contentious law more attractive, the enjoyment of analysing and debating. When I began to train and eventually practice property law I enjoyed the structure and analytical elements. Whilst structured no transaction is the same; mixed in with being part of a persons biggest financial investment being their home, for most, I felt a huge responsibility which I enjoy.

  • What has been your biggest challenge in establishing the property team as in industry leader?

I have invested time in my team and know that each member of my team brings a different value. The challenge I’ve enjoyed has been to learn how to work to every individual’s strength and as a leader to help support, progress development and inspire. I have immensely enjoyed watching many members of my team develop and progress, I’m extremely proud of them.

  • How was property work affected by the Covid pandemic?

COVID challenged us to change how we worked, be it internal procedures, personal organisation or approach to legal matters. COVID has made us better lawyers; to think outside the box you must have a good understanding of regulations and legislation.

  • Are there any other trends that you’re seeing in the market?

The London market has always been frenetic but recent years have been particularly so. From volatile interest rates, changes to SDLT, and challenges caused by the introduction of new legislation such as the Building Safety Act, transaction times have increased and so has frustration. We've worked hard to keep deals together by reducing delays and communication flowing - there's even more involved now so we have to be on it.

  • Who are your typical clients and what do they need you for?

I have 15 plus years’ worth of working relationships with mortgage brokers, estate agents, buying agents and repeat clients. Time invested into every client relationship has allowed me to have a loyal and diverse client base.

  • What do you think sets apart your approach and that of your team?

I prioritise managing expectations and communicating throughout transactions to all parties involved. I enjoy the interaction with all parties, establishing and maintaining relationships through the service I provide. Consistency in this approach without compromise sets us apart as a team.

  • How do you stay to on top of changes in current legislation and changes to the rules?

I have found myself going back to legislation, processing and then applying. We have a diverse team in terms of experience in different areas of property law which allows us to collaborate more as a team, teach and learn from each other.

  • What do you do to switch off?

Long walks and running, including running round my kids!

  • What piece of advice would you give to a potential client who may need your services?

Speak to me. So much comes via email these days and I feel a chat can really help. Any question is a valid question and clients should never feel that a question is ‘silly’. I love building rapport with my clients and understanding what's motivating them - be it moving home, or for investment - I like to share their journey with them.
