Meet our Partners - William Hogg
I was attracted to Family Law because it involves helping people in difficult circumstances; often through the most challenging times of their lives.
I particularly enjoy working with individuals, and Family Law involves solving amongst the most personal and complicated challenges, whether that is in respect of children or finances.
ADR – or non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) – has become more popular for two key reasons. Firstly, there is strong policy of the Courts to promote resolution outside the Court process, as this generally results in agreed outcomes which work better over the long-term. Secondly, there is a greater focus on resolving things amicably and minimising the prospect of contentious (and sometimes costly) litigation.
I see every case as an opportunity to resolve disputes through an amicable and constructive dialogue between parties. As a mediator, I see the positive influence of ADR/NCDR throughout my practice.
I enjoy working with two parties and helping them navigate shared problems and challenges. Unlike contentious litigation, mediation involves forming a ‘team’, which emphasises a collaborative and compromising approach. Mediation is something that helps couples resolve financial disputes in a cost effective manner, but it also allows parents to reach sensible agreements in respect of their children. In respect of the latter, this works wonders for an effective co-parenting relationship. The mediation process also gives children a voice as to their own lives, which is something I promote through child-inclusive mediation.
Naturally, the Covid pandemic put enormous strain on many individuals and families. As such, we have seen new challenges arise as the result of evolving domestic situations and significant economic shifts.
We have also had to perform many court hearings and mediations remotely. However, now that society is moving past the Covid pandemic, the court is facilitating more and more in person hearings. I personally prefer to conduct mediations on a face-to-face basis as well.

Given how strained the Court system is, there is much greater emphasis on the full scope of NCDR, such as Private Financial Dispute Resolution Hearings and Arbitration (which are effectively private courts). There generally is a hunger amongst clients to avoid the protracted and often traumatic experience of litigation, and I increasingly encourage an approach which maximises the prospect of clients resolving their matter outside of court.
There is no such thing as a ‘typical client’ in family law. We work with a broad range of individuals: from both ultra-high net worth individuals to people with very limited resources. We act for a very diverse client base, and with each client, we apply a catered and unique approach to factor in their own needs and the needs of their families. The range of clients I get to work with is part of what makes my job so interesting and rewarding.
We have a fierce dedication to our clients, and that involves first and foremost making ourselves available to them and being responsive to their needs. I always try to establish a sense of teamwork with the client, and often, if the matter does involve the court process, I like involving barristers and other experts at an early stage, so that the client feels a strong network of legal support. Our ethos at Laurus takes a holistic approach to legal wellbeing, and that is certainly what drives our practice.
We combine a range of in-house learning and research with a pro-active attitude to attending courses and seminars – both in this country and in Europe – so that we are always aware of recent changes. We also focus on monitoring trends within the legal sphere, so that we can anticipate new developments. I am currently Vice Chair of the Family Mediators Association, I am on a committee with the Family Mediation Counsel, and I am a member of a European Network of Collaborative Practitioners. This keeps me up to date with UK and international trends in respect of ADR/NCDR.
I enjoy reading, walking, medieval history, and the occasional glass of red wine!
Find the right lawyer: one who prioritises collaboration and problem solving rather than conflict and “winning”. Be sure to explore all the options for resolving your matter in an amicable and cost-effective way.
