Meme, Politics and Algorithms

Meme, Politics and Algorithms

The spread of Social media has no limits. Thus every word we post or tweet advances with the pace of the internet. With one blink of the eyes, the content that is published in the United Kingdom is noticeable in all sections of the world.

The repute of content published can not be evaluated as which content will start trending you never know. Appreciations to the functionality for example Copy Text, Forward and Share options provided in every social media applications - WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook or Twitter and many more. Consequently, the weight and influence of social media are impenetrable and scary both.

It is analyzed and mentioned in researches that nearly 2 billion users monthly exist on Facebook.

Twitter is having around 300+ million monthly live users. Forget about Facebook and Twitter there are rich-text carriers accessible now alike WhatsApp, Wechat, Snapchat, and so on. These are the significant branches of social media.

Why are we discussing these facts? the reason is, we always talk about sentiments analysis, text analytics, image processing, expression analysis but that was all focused on Facebook and Twitter (posts and tweets). Today, the method of post and tweet is redefined by Meme. The reason is Meme floating on social media platforms that can transform the perception with its magnetism. It can make people come out openly with their strong and extreme thoughts. This gives enough evidence to the personalities and organizations that originated the Meme. Presently, is the time of MEMES. Aforementioned means another agent (picture including text and humor) to share your thoughts just like post or tweet.

Let us first touch upon a few applications where Memes are used very frequently. Eventually, we will move towards understanding the Approach and Process of how sentiments analytics is applied in Meme's world?.

Meme Application 1

First one is the Entertainment Industry - How Memes are being used in the entertainment industry? Suppose a new movie is getting released and a Meme of lead pairs with a caption "ready for another flop" is launched. This holds enough strength to trigger emotions and gauge the sentiments. Based on sentiments the Acceptance Factor can be calculated and accordingly the approximate revenue of the movie.

Calculating the volume of people in favor or against or neutral category will help in formalizing the Acceptance Factor.

Meme Application 2

Second, in the league is Product Company - How Memes are being used in product companies? Suppose, an Elite product's Meme launched with a caption "Product for the common man".

It is not matching with product's category as it is an Elite Class product and therefore has capability triggering the discussion on social media platforms. Now again Acceptance Factor with the reactions in favor, against or neutral would be calculated.

Meme Application 3 - The Classic Example

The best example is Digital Politics - It has proved in the past with the election campaign in the U.S.A., and in Asian countries as well. How Trump, Obama and Clinton's Memes were circulating on social media during the last election with people reacting on each Meme that was launched. Same is been observed in India during the election campaign. What kind of Meme need to be created? How a Meme triggers the sentiments? What next after triggering the sentiments? Once the sentiments are triggered and enough data available then Natural Language Processing can be applied for Text Analytics/ Sentiments Analytics. Let us try to understand step by step.

Scenario

Suppose, we need to launch a Meme of a person contesting election having several criminal cases and not so good public image.

Strategy to trigger emotions

The best way would be to have the caption "Best reliable personality with clean heart" this caption is more than sufficient to trigger a debate. People will start reacting on the Memes and sentiments would be recorded by algorithms. Finally, analysis of Acceptance Factor would be evaluated.

Initial Analysis

It is analyzed that Meme that starts with negative thought will always lead you to a positive ending. Many political parties practice this with the help of social media analytics team. The simple reason is -Too much of negativity will irritate people and they will start reacting in just opposite fashion, maybe something like "I know this political leader is not good, but still better than others", from here the positive journey begins.

Intermediate Analysis

Now is the time to launch a positive campaign Meme for the same political candidate with the caption "I am comparatively better than others" and check the acceptability factor. If the later has higher Acceptability Factor then the campaign is on the right track. Almost in 80% of cases, the approach to start with negative thought ends at a positive note.

Social Media Channels and Life of Meme

There is a very positive statistical correlation between the Social Media Channel used for Meme launch and Life of Meme. That means if channels of Meme are changing then Life of Meme will be more which means a higher spread.

With a significant background, this is the right time to understand the process.

Now, let your neurons multiply and connect the dots -

  • Why before the election there is so much of negativity about some particular candidate?
  • Why just a couple of days before election polling, positive views regarding the same candidate through Memes are viral on social media?

You may reasonably possess a larger group of Twitter connections and have might have observed that there are people who made their life’s single agenda to advertise political memes with expectations of controlling and influencing the society. The noticeable part is these connections are mostly our childhood friends, co-workers or business partners and behaving like the agents of a specific political party. Through keypunching unusual text above the picture and sharing that with their connections, creating a biased voice with the significant crowd.

Thus to understand the analytics following the Meme and the channels through which they are publicized in the society should remain controlled. If neither a single forward nor a share and "no like" happens within all possible channels then the originator will never get the Meme back, it is lost. Thus the analysis is not feasible because the minimum population needed to calculate prediction or acceptance factor is not accomplished. Consequently, knowledge of Algorithm, Approach, and Process is highly significant, this assists in building informed and accurate decision alternately of biased judgment.
