Menopause & Your Career: It’s Time to Talk About This Overlooked Workplace Challenge

Menopause & Your Career: It’s Time to Talk About This Overlooked Workplace Challenge

Did you know that 1 in 10 women leave their jobs because of menopause symptoms? And a staggering 90% say it negatively impacts their performance at work. These numbers aren’t just stats—they’re the reality for millions of women globally.

Despite this, menopause remains one of the most overlooked workplace issues. It’s time to change that.

Let's dive into how menopause impacts careers and, more importantly, what you can do to thrive at work during this stage of your life.

The Workplace and Menopause: A Stigma That Needs Breaking

We’ve all heard the phrase: “Leave your personal life at the door.” But here’s the thing—menopause doesn’t exactly wait outside while you walk into the office. Symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, and sleep disruptions can turn even a routine day into a challenge.

Yet, so many women suffer in silence. Why? Because menopause is still treated like a taboo topic, even in 2024. But here’s the truth: Menopause is not a weakness—it’s a natural stage of life.

When you speak up, you are advocating for yourself and paving the way for others to do the same.

Thriving Through Menopause at Work

Navigating menopause at work may not be easy, but it’s absolutely possible with the right tools and support. Here are some strategies to help:

  • Build Your Menopause-on-the-Go Toolkit Keep it simple but effective: a water bottle, portable fan, breathable clothing, aromatherapy, or whatever works best for your symptoms. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
  • Prioritize Self-Care Outside of work, focus on sleep, stress management, hydration, and nutrition. These are your foundation for health and vitality.
  • Communicate Your Needs Whether it’s a trusted colleague, your manager, or HR, let someone know how they can support you. When you educate others, you create allies who can help normalize menopause in the workplace.
  • Advocate for Workplace Policies If your company doesn’t have resources, suggest ideas like flexible hours, wellness programs, or quiet rest spaces. Change doesn’t have to happen overnight; even small steps can ripple into meaningful progress.
  • Know Your Worth Menopause doesn’t erase your skills, expertise, or value. It’s just a new chapter, and you get to write it.

The Takeaway

The takeaway I hope to inspire with this article is that menopause is not a career-ending challenge but an opportunity for growth and empowerment. You can thrive at work and beyond by addressing stigma, advocating for change, and equipping yourself with the right tools and support.
