Mindset Shift – Your Lifetime Skill Card #67

Today we look at #WhyYouDoWhatYouDo

…weighing #Need and #Want.

Need makes you go: “I do this so I can survive!”

Imagine the results: Ambitious dreams you have. But without the basics of food, drink, sleep, hygiene… you know you cannot survive. As health is wealth, you keep these top of mind, untainted by influences that wither their value. You pay top dollar, investing in the best known diets, beds and tools that keep you in your best states of mind. With routines so religious and results defying ageing, you continue living well for as long as you possibly can.

Want makes you go: “I do this so it brings joy into my life!”

Imagine the results: Your basic needs fulfilled, you set your sights on new aspirations, delving further into the soul for deeper meanings of life. Though not crucial for living, what you discover enriches your sense of existence. From a vibrant spread of experiences, to novel luxuries never seen before, to concepts of philosophy… you rise above animal instinct, transcending into a new realm of evolved consciousness that continuously creates new value, thinking for the good of the universe.

Simple thoughts like these can create a world of difference, a different timeline.

I used to focus solely on the thrills and promises of ‘wants’ in my life… travelling the planets on a rocket ship… but without first getting my basic needs in order. Many dreams sputtered out of existence, for I neither had the energy nor resources to will them into existence.

By choosing to invest in myself first; mind, body and soul, I was respecting myself and my potential, rising from awareness to self-mastery. Properly fuelled to stomach the grind, I could then make time and space to express and materialise new creations, building up new worlds that I had originally dreamt of. Of course, while the call of wants can be endless, one must always ensure that their basics are not neglected, lest everything falls into ruin.

“Distinguish between real needs and artificial wants and control the latter.” – Mahatma Ghandi
