Mobility marketplace minute: reflections and inspiration on urban mobility

As 2024 concludes, we have the opportunity to assess the advancements in urban mobility, a sector responsible for approximately 25% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite efforts, emissions from transport have increased in recent years, underscoring the need for continued innovation and policy implementation to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The European Union has made significant progress, with current policies projected to achieve a 52% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. However, substantial investments in sustainable transport modes and the implementation of innovative solutions remain essential to meet these ambitious targets.

The Mobility Innovation Marketplace has been proud to contribute to this shared effort, evolving into a key resource for cities, transport authorities and industry players. Following its rebranding in May, the platform now hosts 480 market-ready solutions and over 60 best practices from more than 40 European cities. These solutions address diverse topics, including energy efficiency, accessibility, multimodality, public transport planning, data collection and pollution reduction.

Curious about the highlights of 2024? Here are just a few of the many examples you’ll find on the Mobility Innovation Marketplace:

  • One of the proposed measures to decrease private car use is boosting multimodal transport. Lecce and Braga took major steps toward promoting multimodality with the Pin Bike tool, incentivising sustainable travel choices such as public transport, active mobility or walking among residents.

  • Efficient logistics are essential for climate-neutral cities. Parkunload’s digital solution has transformed loading zones in Torrelavega and other Spanish cities, reducing noise, congestion and emissions.
  • Safety is fundamental to creating liveable cities. With the rapid rise of micromobility, Luna’s AI-powered technology addresses scooter safety challenges in Istanbul and other cities, paving the way for safer streets for everyone.
  • Electrification is central to the future of transport. You can explore four circular business cases that demonstrate how batteries can be used, reused and upcycled, showcasing a practical path to sustainable electrification.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. The Mobility Innovation Marketplace is brimming with solutions tailored to different urban mobility challenges, showcasing how cities across Europe are leading by example.

As we turn the page to 2025, let’s draw inspiration from these achievements and embrace the journey ahead. Urban mobility is an ever-evolving landscape, and every innovation, no matter how small, is a step toward a more liveable and sustainable future.
