Modifying Your Original Baseline in Primavera P6
Dear Planners and Project Team,
Primavera P6 is giving you more ability to modify your baseline schedule.
By the way, why would you modify your baseline schedule?
Is it always project-management-wise to create a new baseline if the initial one has an issue?
Please comment on why you have ever had a need to modify your original baseline schedule and not create a new one!
There are two ways to actually edit your baselines on P6 and all are found on the "Maintain Baseline" environment: Update and Restore
With restore, you are actually unlinking (removing) the baseline from the project schedule and making it (the baseline) as a standalone, independent project. Both will no longer exist.
Then you can modify the new schedule and re-add it as a baseline again to your project schedule.
In P6, you can use a different independent project as the baseline for another project.
Just remember to first unassign the baseline you want to remove before restoring.

2. Update:
This is the case where you have made some modifications and/or to your project schedule and the team decided that they want those modifications to appear on your baseline.
Click on update and select the items from your schedule that you want to appear on your baseline and update your baseline. In this case, you do not need to unassign the baseline before updating.
You use the Restore approach mostly when the new items you want to introduce to your baseline are not found on your main schedule or are not part of the options giving on the Update approach by Oracle.
What do you think?
Is this cool? or is it anti-project-management?
My thought:
If you are actually going to edit, make sure the new information is communicated and agreed by all who participated in the initial baseline approval!

2moNO you never modify the baseline (un-progressed schedule) that is your line in the sand you measuring stick. How can you tell the differences if you have nothing to measure against if you constantly change it. That's like always moving the goal post.
