MONDAY MUSINGS SEASON 2 - EPISODE 294

30th December 2024

Remarkable power of recognition

WISHING ALL THE READERS A VERY HAPPY, PROSPEROUS & JOYFUL NEW YEAR

We are near the fag end of our series on self-development based on Valmiki Ramayan.  The last two episodes were based on Hanuman’s adventures at Lanka as appears in Sundara Kandam. Sundara Kandam has another very inspirational message exchanged between Hanuman and Sita Mata when Hanuman met her at Ashok Vana. This gives ‘7 traits of demonstrated by effective leaders’. I am not going to repeat this now as this has been sufficiently covered in the earlier episodes of #MondayMusings. Let us move to the next kandam ie Yudha Kandam.

#CopiousAppreciation

We are now at the beginning of Yudha Kandam ie first saragam of Yudha Kandam, Yudha Kandam starts with a very important leadership trait ie recognizing the contributions. Leaders should learn from Lord Ram in encouraging subordinates with kind and encouraging appreciation when they do good work.

Humans have a natural psychological need for respect. The acknowledgement of efforts and a job well done creates a sense of fulfilment, achievement and belonging. Recognition lights a fire within us and drives us to attain greater heights.

No organisation would be in business without its employees. It’s through the efforts of the company’s workforce that its goals are achieved. Often, these employees don’t just do the bare minimum; they take it upon themselves to go above and beyond like what Hanuman achieved at Lanka. It’s only right that such acts of commitment are applauded and those workers acknowledged.

कृतम् हनुमता कार्यम् सुमहद्भुवि दुर्लभम् | मनसापि यदन्येन न शक्यम् धरणीतले || Valmiki Ramayan 6-1-2

Lord Ram about Hanuman’s achievement "A very outstanding work, the most arduous in the world has been done by Hanuman, which could not be carried out even in thought by any other on the surface of this earth."

Hanuman did a great job of finding and comforting Sita, no doubt. But Lord Ram’s appreciation is out of the world. Ram says that this contribution is not possible by anyone else even in thought.

Tanner studied workplace dynamics, and the role management plays in shaping them. An employee survey included the question, "What is the most important thing that your manager or company currently does that would cause you to produce great work?".  37% of respondents said that more personal recognition would encourage them to produce better work more often.

Compared to those who do not consistently feel recognized at work, people who do feel recognized at work are:

-  2.2x more likely to drive innovation and bring new ideas forward

- 2.0x more likely to say people here are willing to go above and beyond

It’s great to celebrate big wins! Just don’t forget about celebrating those smaller or less obvious successes, too.

Capability as well as Attitude are important for Performance. That is what Lord Ram explains with the help of three slokas in the same saragam. That will be in the next episode.

Health warnings like those on cigarette packets should be on news sites dominated by negative headlines, says #PositiveNews CEO, Sean Wood.

Do you get frustrated with excessive does of negative news ingested by us on daily basis? I do. That was one of the motives for starting #MondayMusings newsletter to neutralize the flood of negative news exposure.

Sean Wood suggests a solution.

Our mainstream news is filled with death and doom – and accompanied by a familiar feeling. Of being slightly on-edge. Anxious.

Imagine you read/heard a warning after the negative news - ‘Too much negative news may cause a distorted view of reality and harm your mental health.’ It was enough of a reminder to try to balance things out. Things felt steadier. Calmer. More positive.

This is the vision of Seán Wood, CEO of Positive News. While the idea of health warnings on news outlets is tongue in cheek, the principle of such a measure is the need to help people to more consciously manage their media diet. “It might help us grow our understanding of how our brains are compelling us to consume the news because it triggers, essentially, our survival response – our desire to know about threats.”

The idea originally came from #DeniseBaden, a professor at The University of Southampton who researched ethical issues in news. She used the idea of health warnings as an illustration of how significant the impact of bad news is upon how people feel and upon their sense of agency in the world.
