This month at Buro Happold – November 2024
Welcome to our latest newsletter. In this month's issue, we look at highlights from November, including reflections on the recent UN biodiversity summit, our Global Young Employee Forum Summit in Munich, and the shaping of a sustainable city for the future.
Our Global Young Engineers Forum Summit
In November, 17 Young Employee Forum (YEF) representatives came together in Munich, Germany for a Global YEF Summit to share experiences, plan, and define the YEF. The summit coincided with a meeting of our Global Leadership Team.
Representatives from all Buro Happold regions, UK, EU, ME, India, Asia Pacific and USA, reinforced the YEF's core purpose to foster social connection, enhance career development, and enable societal impact for all employees at senior grade and below.
Navigating nature: risks, reporting and returns
As we approach the end of 2024, two conferences have come to a close, both impacting the future of the built environment: COP16 and COP29.
As the UN biodiversity summit COP16 took place in Colombia, we looked in detail at the perilous state of nature. The environmental, social and governance (ESG) landscape increasingly identifies nature as an area that requires a singular focus. Through frameworks like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and other reporting initiatives, the ESG space now integrates nature into the heart of business decision making.

Shaping a sustainable city of the future
Buro Happold played a pivotal role in shaping F.S.O Park into a model of sustainability and innovation. We helped OKAM Capital to develop a vision for a sustainable city of the future on a brownfield plot on the outskirts of Warsaw.
The vision is to transform the former car factory site into a highly sustainable and climate resilient new community, with 20-hectares given over entirely to urban greenery, including a new 10-hectare public park.

Showcasing inclusive design best practice
We’re delighted to share that RNIB’s Grimaldi Building was the winner of the inclusive design award at the EG Awards. Buro Happold provided inclusive design, lighting, MEP, acoustics, and asset consulting for this project. The building was designed with consideration for all potential user needs and particularly includes innovative design interventions for neurodivergent, and blind and partially sighted people.
Since its completion, the Grimaldi Building is the first office building in the UK to achieve the recommendations set out in PAS 6463, ensuring the RNIB’s London headquarters is an exemplar of inclusive design.
