More Heroic Stories Please

More Heroic Stories Please

We need more heroic stories; now, more than ever. Not messianic stories, seeking out that one hero that will supposedly save the world... but heroic stories... real and fictional... that will rise up more everyday heroes. We need the Neville Longbottoms and Aragorns alike. And ... we need to read them, speak them, write them, sing them and live them. We need to honor them... to make them known.

Attention Attention

Shinedown is my favourite band of all time; hands down, Shinedown. I love me some Thin Lizzy and the Doobie Brothers and Led Zeppelin and more. I love me alot of Alter Bridge too. Queensryche. Bit of a rocker, I am. lol.

But Shinedown rules.

I do not worship them. I thoroughly and deeply enjoy their music, their lyrics and their approach to their craft. This concert speaks and sings and plays much to what they are about I believe and contend. Their latest album Attention Attention is more of a concept album (if you will), and I think the story line is heroic, real and raw. I am piecing my own take on the story as the videos become available.

You get a sense of what Brent Smith suggests when he said...

  • "At the beginning of the record, you can feel this intensity and these bold statements that are being made, but as the record progresses, you hear the individual and the record start to shift, and they start to get their confidence back, and they start to understand what's going on, because they're having to face emotions that they've never really faced before. We call it digging in the dirt mentally. This person has to flush it out. In order to be able to get out of this room and out of this chair and go back into the world, they have to train themselves mentally. They have to accept the fact that it's not always going to be great. It's not always going to be exactly the way you want it."

This album is heroic in its story, and I love it. I offer this because (a) we need more stories of real everyday heroism and (b) we need the epic stories of same.

ANOTHER STORY

Last week, we offered up Chapters 5 and 6 of The Realm Between. It was on truth and heroism. The week before we did a bit of a catch up with Exploring the Realm Between. If you have not already done so, I humbly but assertively suggest you catch up by reading up. This is an unfolding story of heroism. You see, in the last couple of months, I consciously changed the focus of Sharpen the Blades, for at least the next few months, and running up to my own birthday February 20, 2020.

  • Sharpen the Blades is a blog series about character and love in response to life and work. Each post is an exploration of an aspect of character and love and their impact on living and working more successfully, however we might define such. Sharpen the Blades is about preparing our character (and love) as strength; in the face of life and work. Period.

  • As I noted last week, "The focus has not changed but it has. We chose to explore The Realm Between by my dear friend and "soul sis" LD Olsen. It is an epic tale of spirit and character and more... and a story I have been personally awaiting to read for a decade. The book is out now on Wattpad, and I am pumped."

So, and again, go back to Exploring the Realm Between. Then...

CHAPTER 7: Unease at the Educata

When I read this Chapter, (a) I chose to stop at this Chapter and take it all in, including The Anthem which is mesmerizing and inspiring me... and (b) I was struck by the virtue and strength of character that is Honor.

Honor is heroic. I see it in Tahira's practice of Service, and in Orpheus' recognition of same. I see it in the orders for safety, the command to adhere to same, and the recognition of the Service of Savius.

Consider Honor and Service

Honor and Service. They are heroic. We can best be thankful for same that we witness in others by living their example.

Whether in fiction, or lyric or story... whether in life or beyond... we can honor our heroes by living our best lives. We can be the fire, or the light.

Tahira and Ayne are becoming heroes for me. Somehow, I knew they would... and I look forward to the story unfolding.

The character in the story of Attention Attention is too. Both stories and their protagonists join the heroic of my childhood and since; those from which I learned and continue to learn. None were nor are perfect for perfect as noun is myth. Perfect as verb is heroic.

We need more heroes, at home, school, work, business and community. We need educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders who will take care of the soil. We need those who will explore our fear. Indeed, Jenny and I are writing on that this month. My point is that we need to be inspired and to inspire.

Tahira is helping with that, for me. I hope you join me in reading this wondrous book. I hope you join me in sharing it. It is free and accessible to all and it is a great journey for youth and adult alike; separate or together.

We need more heroic stories; to read them, hear them, write them, dance them, sing them and create them.
