A Morning of Inspiration with Carlo Cordaro at Asmara Urban Resort, Powered by Archipelago
This morning, I had the pleasure of meeting with carlo cordaro , a renowned Italian designer and entrepreneur, for breakfast at the stunning Asmara Urban Resort & Lifestyle Village in Cebu, now proudly powered by Archipelago. Carlo, known for his innovative approach to design and furniture, gave me a personal tour of the resort, revealing the inspiration and stories behind each meticulously crafted piece of furniture. His ability to blend functional design with artistic expression is evident throughout the property, showcasing his commitment to both aesthetics and practicality.
Carlo Cordaro's journey to Cebu is as fascinating as his designs. Originally hailing from Italy, he ventured to the Philippines to explore new opportunities, settling in Cebu—a place known for its rich tradition of craftsmanship. Here, he has integrated Italian design sensibilities with local artisanal skills, creating a unique fusion that appeals to a global audience. His work not only highlights the craftsmanship of Cebuano artisans but also brings a slice of Italian luxury to the tropical setting of the Philippines.
Among his most famous collections are the "Atelier" series, which features bespoke furniture that combines sustainable materials with traditional techniques, and the "Tropicale" collection, celebrated for its vibrant use of natural fibers and textiles that evoke the lush landscapes of the Philippines.
The property itself, Asmara Urban Resort, is a reflection of Carlo’s vision for a space where design and nature coexist harmoniously. Every element within the resort is carefully curated to enhance the natural beauty of its surroundings while promoting sustainable and innovative design practices. I’m particularly excited about the upcoming opening of the resort’s spa, which promises to offer rejuvenating experiences that complement the serene ambiance of Asmara.

Last night, the connection to design and culture was further celebrated over dinner at Asmara’s Italian restaurant, where I was joined by Carlo and friends from Cebu. The evening brought back fond memories of Rome, especially a dinner last December at Poppa, where a close friend, Nicola Seghi , introduced me to their legendary meatballs—an appetizer that wonderfully complemented our conversation about design, culture, and culinary arts.
Carlo Cordaro's achievements in Cebu highlight his innovative spirit and his ability to connect people through his work. His journey from Italy to the Philippines bridges diverse cultures, marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern design aesthetics. As we discussed future projects and potential collaborations, I was inspired by the possibilities of creative synergy and the impact of genuine experiences.
Reflecting on today’s tour and last night’s dinner, I am reminded of the profound influence that thoughtful design can have on our experiences and interactions. Carlo’s work at Asmara Urban Resort, enhanced by the support of Archipelago International , is a must-visit for anyone interested in the intersection of design, culture, and hospitality.
