Morning vs. Night Routines

Morning vs. Night Routines

When I’m doing my end-of-year recap and assessing what tweaks I need to make personally and professionally for the next year, one thing I always reflect on is my Morning and Nightly Routine. I’m such a believer that these routines set you up for success - let’s talk about it!

Quick personality poll:

Are you more... “The early bird catches the worm.” OR “While they’re sleeping, I’m grindin’.”?

Now that we’ve all shared that moment of truth, I’m here to tell you: whether you’re a morning or night person, you still need a routine! Your biz deserves it. Especially if you’re building your business on the side.

If you follow me on IG or Tik Tok, you know I'm a morning person. I get a lot of questions about how I organize my time, so this week I thought I'd share my typical schedule with you:

6:00-6:30 meditate, read through emails, get up and get to the gym.

6:30-7:30 cardio and weight lifting (and read through emails, asana at the gym during cardio), leg or back/arms for lifting weights.

7:30-8:30 head back to my house and get ready for the office.

8:30-12  Blavity calls all morning

12-1 Lunch at home. Walk around the neighborhood or sit outside to get some Vitamin D.

1-5:30: External calls or Blavity group calls. Sometimes problem solving a situation that has happened in the A.M. on the west coast now that other people are up and working.

6:30- 8:30 p.m make sides for dinner, advise WorkSmarters or consulting calls

8:30 - 10:30 p.m. Read, watch tv, veg on Tik Tok, talk on the phone etc.

I believe in waking up naturally with the sun between 5:30-6:30, sweating for 30 minutes and pushing forward with my morning. I'm pretty much useless at doing anything productive after 7:30pm so I use that time to socialize, unwind or reconnect with people. I put in about 10 hours during the work week on my other businesses and then do 4 hours a day on the weekends. Multiple businesses means maximizing my mornings to be incredibly productive and focusing on getting my work DONE during the day.

Here’s a simple way to figure out when you’re the most productive and start to build a routine that will help you stay in flow with your energy:

Do you find yourself mentally creating a to do list right when you wake up? If so, that may be your brain telling you it’s time to work. Put in a couple of hours before you clock in to your 9-5. Try this:

  • Write down your to do list, or just a complete brain pour of everything you want to get done
  • Get active for at least 15 mins. This helps get the blood pumping. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, this will set you up for more productivity
  • Get OUT of bed. Sit up somewhere and start on your tasks
  • If you have a limited amount of time, get started on the tasks that will be the quickest

Do you hit snooze until the very last minute but get a burst of energy after the sun goes down? Write down some of the things you want to get done as soon as they come to mind. Then at 7:01, get busy. Try this:

  • After your work day, take about 15 minutes to meditate. Decompress. Release that 9-5 from your mental space
  • Take out the to do list you started and start with the most pressing task
  • Once you get through as much as you can and start feeling yourself wind down, start creating a list of what still needs to get done for you to refer to tomorrow. Don’t overwork yourself. It leaves you less productive for tomorrow

Small tip: A trick I’ve been using lately to keep me motivated on longer days is an “already done list”. Crossing things out on your to do list feels great, but try writing down a list of everything you’ve done before you clock in to work or right before you’re finally about to get some sleep feels like success. It is so rewarding to count your accomplishments and visually see that you’re winning at the routine YOU created. Celebrate your wins!

This was an insightful read, Morgan DeBaun 💡 I’d like to believe I’m a morning person because having things done and having my gears turning by 6-7:30am is the most satisfying way to start my day. But as I transition into the #wfhmom life, I’m finding it a bit more difficult to get up and get going without dragging or smashing my alarm several times 🤔 I think it maybe be time for a transition. This was helpful ✨

You forgot one important thing, and probably the most important: 5am --- Have your first meeting with the Master of the Universe - get load up for the day with His awesome presence and Spirit - let's Him give you instructions for the day (read the scriptures) then.... the rest comes 😎
