Motivation is an Inside Game, Issue #147

Let’s tell it like it is. There is never a good time to start a business. Starting a business is not convenient; it is not easy, and it requires us to learn new things, take chances, and, most importantly, stretch ourselves.

So, instead of jumping in, you daydream about being your own boss, you imagine making piles of money, and you think about how great it will be when you can set your own hours. But you’re missing the motivation to take the first step, so you keep waiting until it feels “just right.”

NEWS FLASH: If you’re waiting to feel motivated to start anything, you’re in for a long wait.

Most of the important actions I take in my life every day have nothing to do with feeling motivated. I’m not motivated to walk six miles a day, not motivated to eat healthy food, and not motivated to attend the networking event that’s on my calendar today. But I do these things anyway because I want the results that taking those actions produce.

Let’s start thinking about life differently – in a way that might seem backward.

Instead of thinking about what you feel like or want to do right now, think about your “future self” and who you will be as a result of taking action now.

For example, two weeks ago, my family wanted to travel to New York City to attend the Auto Show. As soon as the idea came up, I started to think about how I could get out of going. I’m not into cars, I don’t really like New York City, and I already had plans for the day (to stay holed up in my office working).

But I shifted my thoughts and started considering the adventure I would have with Greg, Stephen, and Andy. I thought about how we would have a big, shared memory together. I thought about the conversations we would have. I decided that I didn’t want to miss out on that. So I went; I relaxed into the day and had fun. It was worth working through my feelings.

I’m not looking forward to the networking event I’m attending today. I have to shower earlier than usual, I have to choose something to wear (which I don’t enjoy), and I’m not sure they’re going to serve food that I’ll want to eat. Plus, I really HATE small talk.

But some of my clients will be there, and it will be good for business to show up. I know it’s important to continue to meet other entrepreneurs who will be there too, and I’ll likely learn something from the speaker.  So I’ve shifted my thinking.

To get the results you want in your life, you’ll need to think about your future self and what she needs to do now to get there. Don’t wait for motivation. It’s not coming.
