Multi-generational holidays.. What makes them work ?
There comes a time when three, even four generations of a family decide to holiday together. Most recently I had a couple celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary and they came to me looking for the perfect holiday to suit everyone, each with a different level of interest and mobility.
It could have been a tough call, and whilst I love a challenge, I knew I had to just work through what it was that would make the holiday a success for everyone and especially for the "Golden Couple".
Last year, I went on a multi-generational holiday. To be truthful, I didn't know at the time that my fellow travellers would be from aged 4 to 84 but it turned out to be one of my best ever holidays.
I dont know about you, but I cant stand the thought of being overrun by other peoples out of control children and rampaging kids clubs, but this holiday took me totally by surprise.
The program I put forward to my "Golden Couple" offered a wide spectrum of half day and day trips. Some of the family could go hiking, or cycling on one of the complimentary bikes, whilst for the less mobile a coach trip, wine tasting, castle tours and for the coffee and cake brigade, a city town walking tour - each trip offering a perspective of the host country and local culture. You'd be amazed how many engaging conversations the kids were having about having visited a REAL CASTLE with a REAL LIVE COUNT!
When a venue that's normally very adult focused gives itself over to children, you'd expect some challenges. But these are swiftly negated by experienced Family Hosts, who are on hand to ensure that the children have an unforgettable time. Everything from interactive cooking classes with the chefs (encouraging a messy but rewarding, hands on approach), craft workshops and "Live the Lingo" fun language sessions throughout the journey - these are activities the whole family can take part in - family team building !!
Kids need their own space, that's why a dedicated Spaces for Kids and Teens pops up - its their space with their own lounge and games room, but they like to feel special so a VIP ship tour hosted by the Captain or the Hotel Manager will tick that box. The Kids-Own Movie night was also a hit where kids enjoyed popcorn-fuelled screenings of family-friendly films along with their new onboard friends and Family Hosts.
The children I met on my last trip were amazing - there were some from North America, some from Canada and a few from closer to home but all behaved impeccably and were a delight to socialise with.
When it comes to food we know Kids can be picky, as can some adults. But with kid-friendly menus for each meal, and unlimited beverages onboard, they can chose to eat grown-up food or just what they want to eat. Those of you who have brought up kids will know that prescriptive dining can be a recipe for a sticky situation !!

A few days into our trip, after some of our young travellers got to know each other they formed their own table for dinner, accompanied by the family hosts it was a very grown up experience for them; I clocked the proud parents and grandparents looking on too !
There are many reasons why you should think about a river cruise for a multigenerational holiday, not least the intimate size; the chances of someone getting lost is pretty low vs a gargantuan cruise ship, but also the relaxed family friendly environment making the kids feel at ease in what is first perceived to be an adult world. This is an unique opportunity for multi-generational families to spend quality time together, sharing meals away from the hectic callings of life, exploring new and very different destinations together, enjoying the river and of course the scenery from the sun deck, it's here that families can create lasting memories together.
And that is what my "Golden Couple" asked of me ….for their children and grandchildren to have forever memories of their family holiday.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and have a chat with me about multi-generational holidays - it will be my pleasure to guide you in finding something very memorable.
