My Mother's Last Words to Me Were...

My Mother's Last Words to Me Were...

The last words my mother said to me before she died were, "Take care of yourself."

The past couple of weeks have been quite hectic for me.

Between celebrating my birthday, managing multiple social and work commitments, and staying dedicated to my clients, I’ve had a full plate.

While I’m committed to my fitness routine and enjoy being busy, it’s easy to become drained, physically, mentally, and emotionally, if I’m not careful.

Being self-employed and running my own coaching business means I’m constantly striving to improve professionally, write a book, manage finances, and oversee day-to-day client accountability and growth.

Add to this the physical demands of rigorous exercise and maintaining a strict nutrition regimen, and the result can be overwhelming.

I’m sure many of you can relate to this feeling of being stretched thin.

It’s a common experience for those of us who are driven to succeed.

But this drive can sometimes lead us to neglect the most important element of success: our personal wellbeing.

Why Self-Care Is Essential

No matter how much you love what you do, it’s crucial to prioritise your wellbeing in all aspects of life—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

When one area is neglected, it can quickly drain your overall energy, leading to stress, frustration, and a diminished capacity to perform at your best.

As a coach, I work with my clients to create balance across these areas. Here’s how:

  • Mental Wellbeing: We focus on improving clarity of mind and the ability to concentrate without distractions, both internal and external.
  • Emotional Wellbeing: We explore how well your needs and desires are being met, and whether you’re responding to situations consciously rather than reacting impulsively.
  • Spiritual Wellbeing: We align your beliefs, values, desires, and purpose with your actions to ensure you’re living in harmony with what truly matters to you.
  • Physical Wellbeing: We assess whether you’re getting the right amount of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and rest.
  • Environmental and Social Wellbeing: We evaluate how your surroundings and social interactions support or hinder your performance.

When one or more of these areas are out of balance, your overall energy is depleted, and you may find yourself operating from a lower, more negative state of mind.

Instead of feeling optimistic and energised, you might start to feel stressed and pessimistic.

The Power of Boundaries

This past week, I noticed my own energy levels dipping.

I became short-tempered, fed up, and found myself overthinking rather than staying present.

Recognising this, I took a step back and gave myself some much-needed time off to rebalance.

It’s easy to lose sight of our own needs when we’re focused on helping others.

This is why self-care is so critical.

If I’m drained, I can’t help anyone else at the level I know I’m capable of when I’m at my best.

Setting positive boundaries is key to protecting our energy.

For example, I’ve decided not to respond to calls or messages after a certain time each day.

This gives me the space to simply be with myself, recharge, and maintain balance.
