Navigating Change - How to take out the stress & anxiety from big changes in life or work

Change is painful !!

Growth is painful !!

But nothing is more painful than being stuck in a place where you don’t belong !!

I have experienced massive change several times in my life & career - moving from a high paying executive job to entrepreneurship, moving to a new country & starting a new life from scratch (more than once), starting up several businesses simultaneously in unfamiliar business environments and others.

Usually, the bigger the change, the higher is the pain and discomfort.

It’s important for us to realize and remember that our brains are actually wired for certainty, stability and familiarity.

This is understandable considering the human brain’s primary task is to help us survive.  From the evolutionary standpoint, human beings have had higher chances of survival in environments that are stable and constant, rather than those that have had high levels of change, turmoil or disaster.

This evolutionary mental wiring (that continues to remain with us over the years) , is the root cause of the discomfort & anxiety that we experience while going through big changes in life, relationships or careers.

However, from my own experience, I know that staying stuck in a place where we know that we don’t belong is also equally painful.

This could be an unrewarding job, an incompatible relationship or continuing to drag oneself in a career that is unfulfilling while at the same time harboring dreams of entrepreneurship or an unconventional career path.

“Getting unstuck” from these kind of situations and moving forward toward the life that brings us true purpose, is the key to sustainable happiness & growth. This however is easier said than done.

Good news is that getting through change with grace is not just down to psychological or philosophical mumbo-jumbo today.

With latest (simple) neuroscience tools, it is possible to Rewire the brain so that it supports rather than sabotages the big changes that we seek in our lives.

This requires mindful introspection to understand which fears and/or comfort zones may be limiting action and training the mind with tools that have been proven by neuroscience to help us overcome those fears to take sustained, consistent and disciplined action towards our goals.

Here are my Top 10 coping strategies to deal successfully with change ::

  1. Acceptance, Mindfulness & Positive IntelligenceAccept that change is a natural part of life.Positive Intelligence tools help us understand that the root cause of stress & anxiety that we experience during phases of change, are our natural human survival instincts.By becoming deeply aware of these hardwired patterns, we start to recognize the stress and anxiety as a sign, pointing us in the direction of our values.Positive Intelligence tools & exercises, can help you in labeling disruptive thoughts & emotions, while also helping you stay present and shifting mind activation to positive, empowering thoughts.

  1. Time Management and Organization:With many of us, the stress & fear associated with change somehow pushes us into a quagmire of procrastination, where we end up not taking actions at all or delaying them, and this further adds to the stress.Develop effective time management and organizational skills to help you stay on top of tasks and responsibilities during times of change.Create to-do lists, set priorities, and establish routines to bring structure to your life.

  1. Education and Skill Building:If the change in your work involves new skills or responsibilities, invest time in learning and skill development. Gaining competence can boost your confidence and reduce stress.Seek out training programs or resources that can help you acquire the necessary skills.

  1. Visualize Success:Use visualization techniques to imagine yourself successfully navigating the change. In our Positive Intelligence program, we support clients with a range of Guided 2 min Visualization exercises that help in shifting mental activation and in building new mental habits that help with positive change.

  1. Flexibility:Embrace flexibility and adaptability as key traits in dealing with change. Recognize that unexpected challenges may arise, and be prepared to adjust your approach.

Remember that coping with significant changes takes time and effort. It's okay to experience a range of emotions during these transitions, including anxiety and uncertainty.

By implementing these psychological coping strategies, you can better navigate big changes in life or work and emerge from them stronger and more resilient.

The eventual outcome surely feels liberating and even exhilarating when it all works out.
