Navigating Natural Disasters: ACI's Role in Streamlining Humanitarian Aid Delivery

Argentina, Brazil, France, Kenya, Indonesia, the UK, and even the UAE are just a few of the countries that have suffered from deadly flooding since the beginning of 2024 alone. While the world rightfully focuses on the damage caused and the aid needed to sustain the impacted communities, ACI’s expert eyes place its focus on managing the logistics and supply chain management needed to ensure that the aid available reaches the intended recipients. Our goal, and privilege, is to use our expertise and play our part to streamline the process of aid delivery to the people and communities who need it the most.

In fact, we have a specialised humanitarian response team that is dedicated to staying continuously aware of ongoing natural disasters and the associated aid response efforts; as such we have a keen awareness of the challenges that come along with the process and are always eager to apply our experience to the aid of communities in need.

Real-Time Data

With the experience that ACI Logistics has with reaching remote, disaster-stricken and conflict-prone areas around the world, we have been able to learn and adapt over the years to be able to provide continuous and sustainable support to disaster-stricken areas. ACI Logistics has made significant investments in the network, infrastructure and technology that enables us to sustain operations in afflicted zones. Our experience, network and live data collection has been key in developing our knowledge of the legal framework in the countries in which we operate. Global logistics are shaped by the rapidly changing customs and import regulations, and our teams are at the forefront of that framework.

Disaster Types

As one can imagine, many factors go into successfully managing logistical operations amid natural disasters. From gaining access to the areas affected to managing all involved resources and legalities.

Understanding the type of disaster we are facing is essential to our success; rapid (e.g. earthquakes) vs slow (i.e droughts) onset disasters and the ability to scale operations accordingly is crucial to an effective relief operation.  One of the most essential elements is risk assessment and effective planning to best utilise all means at hand. Identifying the areas most vulnerable to specific risks; whether natural or conflict-related. Being aware of potential issues allows us to plan and create contingency plans for the same. Putting in place effective and efficient coordination mechanisms for supply chain and resource allocation is crucial to ensure that operations are run as smoothly as possible in such situations.

Coordination of Efforts

Managing a large-scale disaster relief effort is an operation that involves many stakeholders. ACI Logistics has been at the core of the coordination and communication strategies that can be a herculean task, but one that is essential to an effective operation. Managing resources and personnel from government agencies, NGOs, and international organisations can only be done through efficient coordination and prompt sharing of resources and accurate information between all parties involved.

Transport & Storage Infrastructure

At the core of any logistical operation is the transportation and distribution of goods and services. Another element that requires careful assessment and planning is the infrastructure within areas affected by disaster or conflict. This means looking at the extent of the damage done to roads, bridges and possible flight paths and landing areas. Finding safe and secure alternative access routes that ensure that the goods and personnel needed to reach do so safely and in excellent condition.

Finding locations for warehousing and storage solutions in disaster-stricken areas can be a great challenge. Locations have to be secure, both from further damage from the elements and from any potential conflicts in the area, and they must be within reach of the afflicted communities to enable quick and efficient distribution of the needed supplies. At ACI Logistics, our extensive expertise in warehousing solutions enables us to be in the best position to advise on the most strategically successful locations and setups. Something that must also be considered in setting up aid distribution solutions is its effect on an already fragile environment. Sustainable practices must be put in place to minimise any ecological impact from ongoing relief operations.

Effective Management

Even with the best of intentions, the best-laid plans can go awry. The importance of coordination, communication, and sharing of valuable information and resources cannot be overstated. The experience and resources in its network that ACI Logistics has accumulated in its 20+ years within its industry is an invaluable asset to any organisation looking to be a part of any disaster relief efforts anywhere in the world.
