Navigating Redundancy - You Got This

Navigating Redundancy - You Got This

Over the past few months, the property industry has been slowing, and across the industry, we have seen more redundancies and people let go. Being made redundant can be a difficult time for many people; there can be feelings of "why me" and rejection, concern over the future. As we started Build Px to make a difference, we wanted to share some tips to help. You may even like to share them with friends and loved ones:

Acknowledge Your Feelings:

  • Allow yourself to feel a range of emotions, including shock, anger, sadness, or fear.
  • Take time to process your feelings and understand that it's okay not to have all the answers immediately.

Assess Your Financial Situation:

  • Evaluate your financial status, including any redundancy pay or benefits.
  • Create a budget to manage expenses and prioritize essential bills.
  • Seek financial advice if needed to make informed decisions about your finances.

Update Your Professional Profile:

  • Refresh your resume, LinkedIn profile, and folio/work examples to highlight your skills, achievements, and experiences.
  • Consider updating your skills or pursuing additional training to enhance your employability.

Network Strategically:

  • Reach out to your professional network, former colleagues, and industry contacts for support and job leads.
  • Attend networking events, join relevant online forums or groups, and engage with individuals who may offer valuable insights or opportunities.

Explore New Career Paths:

  • Take time to reflect on your interests, strengths, and values.
  • Research potential career paths or industries that align with your skills and passions.
  • Seek guidance from career counselors or coaches to explore new opportunities.

Maintain a Positive Mindset:

  • Stay positive and resilient, even in the face of challenges or setbacks.
  • Celebrate small victories and milestones in your job search journey.
  • Believe in your abilities and trust that brighter opportunities lie ahead.

Prioritise Self-Care:

  • Take care of your well-being by staying active, eating healthily, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.
  • Lean on your support network of friends, family, or support groups for emotional support.
  • Consider seeking professional help if you're struggling to cope with feelings of anxiety or depression.

Set Achievable Goals:

  • Break down your job search into manageable tasks and set realistic goals for yourself.
  • Create action plans for each goal, outlining specific steps you'll take to achieve them.
  • Stay focused and motivated by tracking your progress and adjusting your plans as needed.

Stay Flexible and Open-Minded:

  • Be open to opportunities that may not align exactly with your previous role or career path.
  • Consider freelance work, temporary positions, or contract roles as viable options while continuing your job search.
  • Remain adaptable and willing to pivot your plans based on market conditions and emerging opportunities.

Believe in Yourself:

  • Maintain confidence in your skills, experiences, and strengths.
  • Remember that redundancy does not define your worth or potential.
  • Trust in your ability to navigate this transition and emerge stronger on the other side.

Sometimes redundancy can be the push you always needed to get out of your comfort zone. Even if it has not happened to you, it may one day, so take the time to reflect and get to know yourself and what you want. It is a wide world out there, and there are endless opportunities if you sometimes change your perspective.

Great article Seton containing important points especially self-care. The feeling and experience of lots of emotions all in a short period of time can have an impact. It's important to acknowledge and express these feelings and something I'm currently experiencing personally at the moment as I navigate through the process.

Thanks so much Seton for this article. It’s so challenging in this situation and many people feel it’s hard to talk about and it’s so much more common than anyone realised. It’s hard and this is really fantastic and clear advice, thanks again.
