Navigating the VUCAH Seas with the Compass of Courage

Navigating the VUCAH Seas with the Compass of Courage

“Courage starts beyond your confidence.”

Sunday is a big day for me.

I finally run my first marathon.

It took me 53 years to finally do this though I admit that I did not think of running or a marathon for the first 15 or 20 years.

How does this relate to courage?

The above quote stuck with me from my (virtual) running coach.

And I thought about it in the context of the High Performance Coaching I am doing with my clients.

This coaching is based on the six so-called "High Performance Habits". These are habits that have the highest correlation with High Performance and can be influenced and worked on.

Courage as a High Performance Habit

And one of the six is Courage.

It is an interesting one. Far less clear than productivity or influence.

Why?

Let me ask you a question: When have you done something the last time for the first time?

Did that require (real) courage?

Part of my role is to challenge. And that is what clients really like though it is sometimes uncomfortable.

And the challenge around courage is particularly interesting.

Why?

In a lot of cases, it is not real courage when we do something new in our job. It is more "part of the job" and part of "what we get paid for". That lowers the barriers significantly.

Going out on your own and keep going even when you have many setbacks requires courage.

Standing up in a company for something that is important to you or reflects the values of the company but is not followed through in a particular situation requires courage. And this is especially true, when your career is "on the line".

I hope you get the point. Let me know what you think or what examples you have.

Now, let´s have a look why Courage is even more important in today´s VUCAH world or ocean to use a more colourful picture.

Courage in the VUCAH "ocean"

In the vast ocean of our contemporary VUCAH (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous, and Hyperconnected) world, the waves of challenges are relentless, often leaving us navigating through tumultuous waters, uncertain of where the tides may lead us. It is in these moments, where the horizon seems blurred and the destination unclear, that the true essence of courage becomes our guiding star.

Courage, as mentioned, is one of the six high-performance habits. And it is not just the absence of fear but choosing to act in spite of it. It is the intrinsic force that propels us to stand firm, even when the decks are rolling, and to steer our ship with steadfast resolve through the stormy seas of challenges and into the tranquil waters of solutions.

The VUCAH World and its Uncharted Territories

In our VUCAH world, where volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, and hyperconnectivity reign supreme, the traditional maps of navigating professional and personal life often fall short. The rapid technological advancements, shifting global dynamics, and the ever-evolving socio-economic landscapes have transformed our world into an intricate maze of unpredictability.

In such a scenario, courage becomes the compass that enables us to explore uncharted territories, to innovate, and to pave new paths where old ones may no longer lead to desired destinations. It is the catalyst that drives change, fosters innovation, and transforms challenges into opportunities.

Courage: The Unsung Hero in Leadership

Leadership in the VUCAH world demands more than strategic planning and robust execution. It calls for courage: the courage to make difficult decisions, to venture into the unknown, and to embrace the unfamiliar with open arms. It is the courage that empowers leaders to foster environments where their teams feel valued, heard, and inspired to take risks.

Courageous leaders are those who, amidst the chaos, provide a beacon of hope and direction for their teams. They are not afraid to acknowledge their fears and vulnerabilities, for they understand that true strength lies in authenticity and emotional intelligence.

The Ripple Effect of Courageous Acts

Every act of courage, whether big or small, creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to summon their own bravery. When we choose courage, we inadvertently become the lighthouse for others lost in the VUCAH storm, illuminating their path and encouraging them to sail forward with determination and hope.

In organizations, a culture of courage fosters a resilient and innovative workforce. It is where individuals are motivated to step out of their comfort zones, to voice their ideas without the fear of retribution, and to collaboratively steer the organizational ship towards unexplored yet promising horizons. And when those horizons seem to move and no land is insight, it is important to support the individuals and create a learning culture.

Embarking on the Journey of Courage

Embarking on the journey of courage does not necessitate grand gestures or heroic acts. It begins with small, intentional steps: the courage to speak up, to challenge the status quo, to advocate for change, and to be the change.

In the VUCAH world, where the only constant is change, courage becomes our unwavering ally, guiding us through the unknown, enabling us to explore, innovate, and create new narratives of success and fulfillment.

As we sail through the VUCAH seas, let us embrace courage, not just as a virtue but as a habit, a daily practice that empowers us to navigate through the complexities and uncertainties with resilience and hope, charting a course towards a future where we are not merely survivors but triumphant navigators of our destiny.
