Need Focus? Start By Acknowledging your Distractions

"Focus is a matter of deciding which things you're not going to do." ~ John Carmack

These days there are so many distractions around us, competing with our attention, and hindering meaningful productivity.

And, we all know what our biggest distractions are. For most of us, it's our technology; that wonderful super-computer at our finger tips that we call a phone (even though we rarely use it to make actual phone calls).

All summer long, I'm bringing you short hits of information and inspiration to help you ignite high performance in all you do that is important to you!

This week I share ... in 90 seconds or less... a reminder that if you need more focus (and who doesn't?) it starts by acknowledging your distractions.

Watch the video below, or read the transcript that follows, and do away with distractions in the name of getting sh!t done.

We all know when and how we allow distractions and bad habits to get in the way of our success.

Interestingly, distractions and bad habits show up when our energy is low, and we want to procrastinate.

You likely know what your biggest distractions are. Typically these days, it's technology. It's so easy to pick up our phone and find a portal to things far more interesting than the spreadsheet in front of us.

So, we will scroll through social media. We will check our emails endlessly. We'll look online for that next great deal... losing focus and productivity with every click and swipe.

Start by acknowledging what your biggest distractions are. For me, it definitely is my phone, and checking in on all my ‘wonderful’ social media posts, text messages from friends, or entertaining videos on YouTube.

Once you recognize where your distracted tendencies will take you, you can devise a plan, and focus in on the work.

When I have a deadline, or a project that requires my full focus, I pull out my handy mechanical egg timer.  I set that timer for 20 or 30 minutes, and can hear the tick, tick, tick, tick as I work. You might think the ticking would be annoying, but it’s actually very focusing, and reminds me I have important work I need to do.

Because I know that my phone may distract me, I’ll make sure it's in a drawer, in another room… anywhere but the desk I'm working at.

Know what holds you back, know what you need to get done, and set yourself up for success.

Until next time, I'm Michelle Cederberg, reminding you that in order to Ignite High Performance, you need to knock down the barriers that stop you from doing your best, most focused work.
