Never Stifle a Generous Impulse

Never Stifle a Generous Impulse

Five years ago, I felt like I had *lots* of stories I needed to tell. I started writing short version of them here on LinkedIn - when they started resonating with all kinds of people, I realized I needed to write a book.

Just one problem - I had no idea how to write, edit, publish, market, or much less sell a book.

How did I figure it out?

Not intelligence. Not pure luck (though I’ve had an incredible amount of luck). Not brute force will.

One simple answer: *generosity.*

I reached out to countless super smart and creative people - some I knew well like Eric Langshur , Scott Becker , Aurora Aguilar , and Nate Klemp, PhD . Others I’d never met. All were remarkably generous, willing to share their insights on how to craft a narrative arc, pitch an agent, and find a publishing house. In true Hewlitt fashion, they "never stifled a generous impulse" and as a result I got to become an author.

I share this on #GivingTuesday to remind us that generosity isn’t always about dollars. While I absolutely encourage you to support the non-profits who most align with your core values - which for me include entities like USA Triathlon Foundation , Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy , Mercy , and WakeMed - #givingtuesday2022 can be about so much more. So today and everyday, I hope you are inspired to share *your unique experience* with those it can help. Whatever your background, I guarantee there is *someone* whose life YOU can make better through the generosity of your spirit!
