New Leaders Struggle with the People Part of Leading

New Leaders Struggle with the People Part of Leading

I constantly interact with other leaders and when I encounter fresh leaders I ask them what their biggest struggle is. Not surprisingly, their answers usually reflect their consternation with those they lead.

I concur: the people side of leadership can be a challenge.

Here are some things that cause new leaders angst:

  1. Negative interaction between employees. This is not news: some people simply do not like certain people and this can manifest itself in the workplace.
  2. Motivating the team. Leaders often are promoted due to being motivated and good at their jobs. When they encounter others who are not motivated, it can be challenging.
  3. Lack of respect for the organization. Some employees are not a good fit and this can be challenging.
  4. Accountability. If you don’t address it, others assume you condone it.

What can you do about this? There are myriad ways to do this, but EVERY leader can start leading effectively if they focus on these three, basic tenets of leadership:

  1. Take Care of Your People: think like a manager and like a leader and provide them with the things they need.
  2. Be Beyond Reproach: don’t give people a reason to question your morals and ethics
  3. Be the Buffalo: address things that need to be addressed, keeping in mind that you need to have your emotions in check and possess the requisite information to address the situation.

Because I don’t want to inundate new leaders with “more work,” I kept this list simple and basic. These are not things to add to your workload, but rather a manner in which you can address the leadership needs facing you.

There are other things to consider when leading, but these three tenets will set you up for success and cause your angst about leading others to dissipate.
