New Term, Renewed focus?! (or not!)

New Term, Renewed focus?! (or not!)

They're everywhere aren't they? The "kids are back at school so now it's your turn to get focussed" posts!!

Don't get me wrong - I, like many, feel a fresh energy around September as the new academic year begins (I may have bought myself a bit of stationary to get set up, as well as for the kids!). It does feel like a chance to really get focussed, especially when you are self-employed and perhaps took even more flex than usual over the summer, with children off school.

But, my gosh, there's a heap of pressure with that! We can have soooo many great intentions to "do it in September", but what we often neglect to remember is, September isn't just about having some time back when the children are in school.

FRESH START OR BRAIN EXPLOSION?!

Yes, September can feel like a natural point for a fresh start (I even had the urge to clean out my kitchen cupboards last weekend!) but this month can be incredibly overwhelming. Maybe your kids are starting a new school (like mine!) or there are some tricky transitions out of your control, not to mention clubs resuming, tiredness and the mood swings that come with that (and that's just me, let alone the kids!) having had 6-8 weeks of no school, homework, washing uniform, getting sports kits sorted, getting to grips with the ever changing school learning apps... I could go on. Adding more to your plate might feel impossible right now.

Those newsletters and social media posts telling you "now's the time" may push you into action, OR make you feel like you're failing.

As a Coach and Mentor, supporting aspiring coaches and consultants, like you, who want to shift your patchy business to thriving, so you can not only have the income you desire, but feel proud and be able to say "I did it!", I pride myself and not being an ‘I told you so’ kind of Coach. It is not my place to tell you, because the calendar flipped to a new month, that you should be all over everything! I certainly don’t want to jump on the bandwagon of the back-to-school vibes and new beginnings, and you’re doomed if you don’t use this month to sort your life out.

IT'S YOUR BUSINESS, NOT MINE

Why? Because it’s YOUR business! That said, as a Coach that wants you to get results, it is my job to (gently) challenge, nudge and support you so you can get to where you want to be. That might be in September, or maybe by the end of the year - you get to set your goals that work for you, your business and the life around you.

So, I'm here to say, don’t feel the pressure to have it all figured out.

Instead, use this time to jot down some thoughts about where you want to be heading so when you can hit GO, you know what your next step is:

· What could your business achieve if there were no limitations?

· Where do you want your business to be by the end of this year?

· What needs to happen for you to achieve this? And when can you start?

· What (if any) can you NOT do by yourself?

· If there was just ONE thing you can do today, or this week, that will help move all the above forward, what would it be?

If you have felt like you 'should' have got more done this (or any other) month, especially if it's due to online pressure coming from others, take a breath and commit to walking your path at your pace.

Equally don't freeze in overwhelm and start now delaying until Christmas! Use the questions above to reset and take one step forward.

Great article - I had every intention of easing back in, taking some time to get intentional and planning for the year ahead but I seem to have got sucked into lots of doing. This is a good reminder to carve out some time. On that note, coffee soon?
