News from Brazil and South Korea

Over the past few years, new and emerging offshore wind markets have been ramping up work on having their first megawatts installed in the coming years. In the last couple of days, we have seen several updates from Brazil and South Korea alone, indicating the industry's strong interest in developing offshore wind projects and the supply chain in the two countries.

In Brazil, TotalEnergies, Petrobras and Casa dos Ventos have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) under which the three companies will study opportunities for joint investment and offtake in onshore wind, offshore wind, solar and low-carbon hydrogen.

Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie, has signed two agreements related to offshore wind development in Brazil, one with the local company Prumo Logistica for environmental, regulatory and other offshore wind-related studies, and one with the Rio Grande do Norte state government that amends the MOU the company and the State signed in 2021.

In South Korea, Equinor and POSCO International signed an MOU to evaluate joint opportunities for offshore wind development. Under the agreement, the two companies will explore potential joint ventures and joint investments in offshore wind projects, including the Firefly/Bandibuli floating wind project and low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.

South Korea's offshore wind supply chain has reached a major milestone as Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries’ offshore wind installation vessel Hyundai Frontier has installed its first wind turbine at a wind farm offshore the Jeju island. Hyundai Frontier is the country’s first jack-up vessel built specifically for the installation of offshore wind turbines.
