Nurses & Teachers Week, May 6-10, who will you thank?

I love this picture, my mom and my daughter, one a nurse and one a teacher.  I’m posting it this week to invite each of us to take time to thank the nurses and teachers in our lives.  These are predominately jobs held by women and we couldn’t do life without them.  A few facts

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982, commemorating Florence Nightingale, the foundational philosopher of modern nursing and established time to celebrate and thank nurses for their exceptional work.  86% of nurses are women, average starting salary is $83K.  Nurses save our lives and comfort our sick children and aging parents.  They’ve lived on the battlefield and saved our young men and women.

People in the United States started celebrating National Teachers Week in 1953 when Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to set aside a day to recognize educators. 74% of teachers are women and the average starting salary is $55K.  Teachers teach our children not only reading, math, science, history, coding, AI, computer science and yet arguably, the most important thing they teach is how to get along with others, kindness, respect, integrity, how to play nicely together on the playground and dare I say in the board room.

I am extremely proud of both my son and daughter who are nurses. When they put on their scrubs they go in to do their very best. I have heard great stories and some sad ones too. It comes with the job. To my children and all the other nurses out there, thank you for all that you do!

I love this post - thank you for sharing. My husband is a special education teacher and my stepdaughter is a new nurse. Thanks to all of the special people who dedicate their careers to these professions!

Thank you Tami Erwin for reminding us of noble professions of nursing and teaching. My mom is 93 years old and was a teacher for 30 years (along with my Dad too). In fact, she's still "teaching" with her family and friends through her daily habits of reading the NYTimes, doing crossword puzzles, eating healthy and working out. She instilled intellectual curiosity even as a kindergartner teacher:)
