OCC portfolio companies #2: Six Questions with ROCKETO - world’s healthiest convenient dog food company

Open Circle Capital is continuing the series where we talk with the founders of our portfolio companies about their innovations, current business status, and future plans. Today we are having a conversation with Arūnas Matacius and Andrew Butcher, co-founders of ROCKETO. It is a company that creates one of the world’s most advanced dog food, closely mimicking how one might eat in the wild. It is entirely free of toxins and made using ingredients only in their natural form – as supplied by Mother Nature.

 1. How are you changing the industry of pet wellness?

For the past 10-20 years the pet wellness space was dominated by the production of heavily-processed dry food for dogs and cats, which relies on a huge addition of carbohydrates, as well as the addition of synthetic minerals and vitamins. We’re changing that by doing the exact opposite. We process our production under temperatures of 40 degrees instead of usually used 120 degrees. Therefore, our food saves all of its natural nutrients, and we don’t destroy everything in the process. As a result, we don’t need to add anything artificial as everyone else in the market does. We’re probably the first company in Europe that does not rely on adding anything artificial to pet food as we’re one of very few that are making pet food that is very low on carbohydrates and also we are using only organic or ethically wild ingredients. Rocketo is bringing nature back to pets the way nature should be presented to them.

We’re literally creating a new market by combining two existing markets: frozen pet food market, which is considered healthy but has a lot of convenience issues, and dry pet food, which is convenient, but really unhealthy. That is a completely new category that has never been created before. Our food mimics what pets should be eating in the wild, while it’s at the same time very easy to use for pet owners.

2. Why the things you and your company do are important not only to the industry but for the whole world as well?

Pet obesity is on the rise, and it’s mostly due to the high levels of carbs in popular pet food. So we hope to help this 55% of dogs in Europe that are currently overweight and prevent secondary conditions such as diabetes, cancer, joint issues, skin issues, and others.

We are also offering an environment-friendly solution: our food doesn’t require any special storage conditions, therefore we are helping to save electricity. Besides that, our food is 4 times better to the environment than the raw food, because we eliminate moisture, which means that our food weighs 4 times less and takes up 4 times less of volume in the shipment containers than the raw food. Compared to dry food, we’re still almost 2 times more efficient. And all of these calculations are done without even counting in the fact that our food is denser than other alternatives.

3. List a few of your recent achievements.

We’ve finally filed a worldwide patent for our unique dehydration technology.

Moreover, recently we got EU Organic Certification. In this region, we’re the only company, and in the whole of Europe, there are only 5-10 companies, which are significantly larger than ours. So this is a big achievement for us.

We also got recognized by Dr. Nick Thompson, the president and founder of the Raw Feeding Veterinary Society. He literally said that we’re “the future of raw”, so that says it all. We’re glad to be doing something for the future.

Lastly, we are getting a lot of recognition from various award ceremonies – just this year we have received plenty of awards including one for Best New Eco Living Award of 2021 from Nordic Organic Food Fair.

4. What size is your team currently and why top talents are joining you?

One part of our team is located in Lithuania, and then the other part of the team is from the UK. Although it’s worth mentioning that most of those in the UK are working as our advisors, meanwhile the team in Lithuania is responsible for manufacturing, marketing, and other activities. So, 15 of our team members are in Lithuania, 10 others are in the UK.

Eventually, when we’re going to scale up, we will need some people in retail sales. This year we’re starting to negotiate on listing at brick-and-mortar stores all across Europe. That section still needs to be disrupted, and this is where we see a big potential.

We will also have a B2B export team, as there are big markets outside of Europe. We’re signing contracts with South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, etc. If we are successful there, we will probably need people for those markets.

5. How VC capital is helping you to fuel international growth and are you planning to fundraise in the future?

Obviously, VC is the main option for funding a new and unique project like ours. And, of course, we get some incredible support from our investors from navigating all these processes about how our company is supposed to grow, where to move next, etc. Without VCs’ injections, we simply wouldn’t be where we are now.

Actually, we are fundraising right now as our crowdfunding campaign is live on Crowdcube. We have already raised over £320k from 170 investors and a few high tickets are coming so we are already overfunding. We welcome everyone to join our journey in making healthy dog food more accessible. Investment, in particular, will drive Rocketo’s EU and South East Asia expansion

6. What is the long-term vision of the product and the company?

We saw some great examples of exits a few months ago. But our real goal is to deliver the best nutrition to our beloved pets. It’s hard to put a number on that. The ultimate goal is to make people aware that it is possible to feed their pets as well as themselves while keeping it convenient at the same time. People don’t have to rely on traditional foods and supplements when choosing what is best for their beloved pets.

Our vision is to become the #1 healthy pet brand in Europe. And we are talking not only about nutrition. We don’t position ourselves as just a food company. We have supplements, treats, and we have a very diverse team of experts. So it’s hard to say where we are going to end up, but we are looking at the pet-wellness industry really broadly.
