Ocean News & Jobs. 8 March
I'm Giacomo Abrusci, your mussel-y ocean guide and Founder of SEVENSEAS Media, an organization committed to marine conservation through education, awareness, and action. See below for this week's round-up of what's new and what is coming up.
In recent ocean news, an eight-year investigation, detailed in Science, has revealed the concerning vulnerability of deepwater sharks and rays to extinction, attributing the risk to overfishing practices. This in-depth study, which enlisted the expertise of over 300 global experts, disclosed that these species are often inadvertently caught as bycatch in commercial fishing operations but are retained for their valuable oil and meat. Highlighted within the study is the precarious situation of these marine animals, who are characterized by their lengthy lifespans and low fertility rates, making them highly susceptible to fishing pressures. Spearheaded by Nicholas Dulvy, the research not only casts light on the critical state of deepwater shark and ray populations but also calls for the tightening of regulations on the international trade of shark liver oil. Additionally, the study advocates for the protection of 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, a move aimed at safeguarding a significant portion of these species' habitats. The urgency of these recommendations underscores the need for immediate action to preserve the biodiversity of our planet's oceans.
At SEVENSEAS Media, we hope to bring you the latest and most impactful stories from the marine world. Please reach out if you'd like to contribute to this newsletter or publish an article at sevenseasmedia.org

How to Move a 1,000-Pound Rescued Manatee (Swimming Isn’t an Option) The orphans, three baby females, arrived one after the other at ZooTampa’s manatee hospital. The first had been found swimming alone in shallow waters, her umbilical cord still attached. Two months later, another was rescued from a canal. Then came the smallest they’d ever gotten: Manatees typically should weigh about 65 pounds at birth, but this one was only 44 pounds. They were named Calliope, Soleil and Piccolina. Read more...
