Project News
Retrospective CRC Screening Data Collection and Analysis
One of the many tasks of the EU-funded ONCOSCREEN project is concerned with "Retrospective CRC Screening Data Collection and Analysis", in which ServTech is playing a leading role. This work focuses on the collection and analysis of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening data from previous and ongoing CRC screening and early detection studies in national and EU healthcare systems.
ServTech has developed a CRC knowledge management and consultancy instrument that has been a key innovation driver in the ONCOSCREEN project by successfully integrating heterogeneous clinical databases across Europe that are aimed at supporting cancer screening, early detection, and enhancing diagnostic accuracy. This vital integration harmonizes disparate colorectal cancer (CRC) data by creating a unified understanding of data structures, relationships, meaning, policies, and constraints. Utilizing technical and structural metadata, along with a unifying knowledge model, enables cross-institutional coordinated analytical queries of retrospective data while still ensuring data privacy by using a federated machine learning/data analytics approach. The clinical sites involved in the project will provide study data in addition to CRC data found in open databases worldwide.
During the project’s first review, the prototype was highly praised, and a video demonstrating the first version of the system is now available online for further insights into its functionality.
Clinical Trial Update
ONCOSCREEN is pleased to announce significant progress in our clinical trial efforts. Ethical approval has been secured in four countries: France, Portugal, Germany, and Lithuania. As part of this initiative, four clinical sites are now active, including IPO in Portugal, UMC-Mainz and UKSH in Germany, and LSMU in Lithuania. Patient recruitment has commenced at the IPO site, where we are excited to report that 22 patients have already been enrolled.

Colorectal Cancer Risk Mapping Through Bayesian Networks
The paper Colorectal Cancer Risk Mapping Through Bayesian Networks has finally been accepted, appearing in Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. The paper develops a predictive model that aids in characterising CRC risk groups and assessing the influence of a variety of risk factors on the population. In doing so, it makes use of Bayesian networks, which are built from expert knowledge together with a large medical database, to make predictive inferences on the probabilities of CRC given evidence on the variables considered. The result of this work is the creation of risk maps that segment the population into different risk levels depending on specific variables, and a characterization of the influence that these variables may have on the probability of the disease.
With the model's ability to target segments of the population with a higher risk of developing the disease, it will be further used in ONCOSCREEN to design the decision-making processes of future screening programs.
The authors would like to emphasise the importance of making the general population aware of the behavioural factors that may affect the development of CRC, as well as highlight how different segments of the population may need to be addressed differently in terms of public health policies regarding screening and other forms of disease prevention.

Events
European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Congress 2024
The European Society Of Digestive Oncology (ESDO) has attended ESMO Gastrointestinal Cancers Congress from 26-29 June 2024 in Munich. This is the largest worldwide GI meeting with 3500 participants from 101 countries, dealing with impactful new data in GI oncology. ONCOSCREEN had a booth informing visitors about the project, and also organised a Digestive Oncology Research Symposium on "How to Improve the Outomes of Digestive Cancer Treatment: Patient-Based Approaches". The expert faculty from France, Germany and Italy discussed fast-track surgery in gastro-oesophageal cancers, the pharmacologic co-nutrition approach in colorectal cancer treatment, the effect of adapted physical activity in patients with pancreatic cancer and the impact in stage III colon cancer, with a specialist audience.

ONCOSCREEN at the Open Living Lab Days
The ONCOSCREEN project is advancing co-creation efforts in CRC prevention through its Living Lab initiatives. At the Open Living Lab Days in Romania on September 26, 2024, Irina Kolomiiets, from ONCOSCREEN partner, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), presented in the session titled "Transformative Potential of Living Labs in Oncology: Empowering Patient Advocacy and Cancer Prevention."
In her presentation, "ONCOSCREEN HE: A Pan-European Approach to Cancer Prevention Through Living Labs," Irina discussed how the project is engaging patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers to innovate colorectal cancer prevention. She also shared details on ONCOSCREEN initiatives like hackathons, designed to stimulate creative solutions.
The session featured insightful discussions on transforming healthcare structures through Living Labs. Contributions from experts such as Dr. Antonis Billis, Dr. Athanasios Mavropoulos, and policymakers Christine Chommiene and Jan-Willem van de Loo, highlighted how Living Labs can address barriers and empower patient advocacy. Attendees also explored case studies and gained practical insights into applying Living Lab frameworks in clinical research.
Stay tuned for further updates as ONCOSCREEN continues to drive forward its Living Lab initiatives and foster collaboration in oncology-focused healthcare innovations.
ONCOSCREEN Updates
EuropaColon Portugal Screening Drive
In the last newsletter, we shared that ONCOSCREEN partner, Europacolon Portugal (ECPT), was set to launch a national screening drive. ONCOSCREEN is happy to share that since this time, ECPT and Farmácias Holon, have launched a new awareness campaign - "Don’t Let It Unfold" - offering screenings to colorectal cancer in 61 pharmacies.
In line with ONCOSCREENs goals, this campaign aims to raise awareness about early colorectal cancer detection and the impact that screening has on decreasing the related mortality rates.
Vítor Neves, President of ECPT, highlights that "this screening brings significant health benefits and can prevent the disease from advancing to later stages or make therapeutic intervention more effective. Small amounts of blood detected in the stool through this screening may indicate the presence of a tumour or polyps in the intestine, and when treated early, they prevent the progression of the disease”.
The screening is completely free and the inclusion criteria include:
Hack Cancer & Cancel It: Join "Hospiton 2024" Featuring the ONCOSCREEN Special Track
As we noted in the previous newsletter, the Hospiton 2024, running from November 22-24, will feature a Special Track powered by the ONCOSCREEN project, focusing on innovative solutions for colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention and early screening. We are now able to confirm more details!
The ONCOSCREEN Track will challenge participants to develop disruptive and scalable digital tools that encourage a healthier lifestyle and dietary choices, while improving engagement in CRC screening programs. By addressing low participation rates in cancer screening, particularly in high-risk and underserved populations, this track also invites creative approaches to overcome barriers and hesitancy around screening.
Participants will collaborate within an open innovation ecosystem, with world experts in the field acting as mentors, to propose ground-breaking interventions, using real-time data and innovative outreach strategies to enhance prevention efforts. The best solutions will have the potential to significantly improve CRC prevention and screening practices across Europe.
