NO ONE KNOWS YOU’RE A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER?

Are you a social media manager, but it feels like no one knows about it? And to be honest It’s tough to get clients or build your personal brand when people don’t even know what you do. So, how do you step out of the shadows and position yourself so that clients can find you as a social media manager?

In this article, I'll talk about how you can rightly position yourself as a social media manager and start building a powerful brand in the social media management space.

How to Build a Personal Brand in Social Media Management

BE CONFIDENT AND PROUD OF YOUR JOB TITLE

A lot of people feel embarrassed when someone asks, “What do you do for a living?” and they have to answer, “I’m a social media manager.” It’s like they think it’s not a ‘real’ job, or that people won’t take it seriously. But here’s the truth, social media management is one of the most important jobs in the world right now! You help businesses grow, connect with their audience, and sometimes even make sales, and if you ask me that's a lot of work right there. So, don’t be shy about your job as a social media manager. Own it, be proud of it, and talk about it with confidence. When you’re proud of your role, others will see the value in it too.

PROMOTE YOURSELF BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL

Let’s be real, if you don’t hype yourself, no one else will do it for you. You’ve got to share your wins! Did you create a campaign that boosted a brand’s followers or made them money? Post about it! Your potential clients need to see what you can do. It’s not bragging, it’s showing your value. When you start sharing your success stories, people will start noticing you, and opportunities will come your way.

TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ABOUT YOUR WORK

One of the first things I did when I started was let my family and friends know I was a social media manager. Why? Because they’re your support system! They’ll hype you up, share your work, and might even refer you to others. You never know, your first client could come from a friend's recommendation. In fact, my very first remote job came from my sister’s referral. So, don’t be afraid to spread the word in your inner circle, you never know where it might lead!

START BUILDING YOUR BRAND ON ONE SOCIAL PLATFORM

You don’t need to be everywhere at once. Pick one platform and start building your brand there. For me, it was LinkedIn, and I don’t regret that decision. You can choose whichever platform works best for you, whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter. The key is to be consistent. Share what you’re learning, tips, success stories, and engage with others in the space. Over time, you’ll grow your presence, and people will start to notice your expertise

HAVE A MENTOR OR ROLE MODEL IN THE FIELD

Having someone to look up to in your industry is a game-changer. It gives you perspective and helps you see what's possible. Follow someone who inspires you in the social media space, study what they do, and learn from them. You don’t have to copy them, but seeing how they built their brand will motivate you to keep going. If they can do it, so can you!

STAY CONSISTENT, EVEN WHEN IT’S TOUGH

I remember when I started to build my personal brand on instagram, i literally had like 100-200 followers or less and most of my audience were my family and friends, but that didn’t discourage me at all, I kept doing what I was doing. And one thing you must understand is, nothing happens overnight. You won’t build a strong personal brand or get clients in just a week or two of you starting a personal brand, it takes time. The key is to be consistent, even when you feel like no one is paying attention. Whether it’s posting regularly, improving your skills, or engaging with potential clients, keep showing up. Trust me, the effort will pay.

ASK FOR ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW MORE

Don’t be afraid to ask for help from people who have been in the game longer than you. Whether it’s joining online communities, attending webinars, or reaching out to someone you admire, getting advice can save you a lot of trial and error. You don’t need to figure everything out on your own, and the right advice can make a huge difference.

GET READY FOR A LONG, EXCITING JOURNEY

Building your brand as a social media manager is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. There will be ups and downs, but the ride will be memorable. Stay committed to learning and growing, and trust that your hard work will pay off in time. Don’t get discouraged if things take longer than you expect. Just remember why you started and keep going.

And if i'm being honest, The journey to becoming a recognized social media manager might feel very challenging, but if you follow the steps I have listed in this article, you’ll start to see progress in your journey. With time, you’ll build a strong brand that not only gets you noticed but also brings in the clients and opportunities you deserve. So, step out of your comfort zone and show the world what you’ve got!
