The One Question to Ask Yourself Before You Say, "I Quit."

The One Question to Ask Yourself Before You Say, "I Quit."

The No. 1 question I encourage you to ask yourself if you are considering a big change right now is, “Am I running to something, or am I running from something?”

These are two very different things. Offense versus defense. What I see people do over and over again—and I've personally done it in the past—is seek a big shift in their job or career when something inside actually needs to shift. The need for change usually has very little to do with the external environment.

The grass isn't always greener; it’s the hopping the fence that's fun, right? We tend to create the same environment on the other side. Whether you’re walking into a new workspace or starting your own company, it’ll feel like a prison soon if you don't recalibrate on the inside. That’s why we’re already seeing “great resigners” boomerang back to their former employers.

So if you are at a crossroads, sit down and start routing different options. Experiment. Maybe you don’t need to turn right or left, but in the direction of your heart. The beauty of your current gig is that you are getting paid to learn, and if you're gonna run, you might as well run toward something.

One of my favorite things to do is to help people figure out where their passion, purpose and skill collide — that's where bliss resides. The center, that intersection, is where freedom lives. If you’re interested in exploring your route with a driven group of female leaders, executives and founders, apply for the Renegade Accelerator. Applications close March 14.

Ah, Amy Jo Martin, such valuable advice. We keep finding that our Lifestyle Design Clients have SO MUCH more capacity and runway to do what they want and are passionate about in their current positions/companies. As long as....they're willing to ask and open the doors of communication. :) Sometimes, it's scary to see what's possible within the current experience, but often, there's wild opportunity, especially now, when employers making some innovative changes to support the "whole employee." Thank you for sharing and constantly inspiring!
