Overcoming Your Own Resistance

Overcoming Your Own Resistance

If you had to identify one area of your life where you feel you’re encountering the greatest level of resistance, where would it be? Is it in your work? Is it in your family? Is it in your finances? Is it in the wider scope of your relationships? Take a moment to think about your answer. It might be more significant than you initially imagine.

The question is potentially helpful because it reminds us that we usually seek the answers to our problems in the world around us. And this makes perfect sense. We’re conditioned as a species to respond to challenges by identifying the source of the problem – and then we take the appropriate steps to fix it.

But what if the problem can be traced to a deeper source? What if the resistance isn’t simply confined to the circumstances that surround us? What if the problem is an extension of our state of mind? What if our real challenge is to identify the resistance that’s hidden in our deeply-embedded thoughts and feelings? What if the real problem is encoded in our belief systems?

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts.

With our thoughts, we make our world.

-      Buddha

We are all the products of our upbringing and the early childhood conditioning that shaped our personalities. We were taught to accept certain values that continue to exert their influence on our lives for as long as we live. And this is where many of our obstacles can be found.

Let’s take a simple example. If you grew up in a household that experienced anxiety over money, you’re less likely to feel comfortable around financial issues. You learned to associate money with stress, fear and anxiety. This is why so many people are afraid of money. For them, it becomes a source of fear rather than a simple, neutrally-balanced means of paying for things. The problem is not in the money. The problem is in the underlying beliefs and attitudes about money. Strangely, even when money is in plentiful supply, this particular attitude can create anxieties and chaos in any area connected to finance. The answer is to examine the nature of your underlying beliefs before attempting to change the way your life functions on the surface of your daily existence. When you uncover the source of your fears, you can begin the process of neutralising their influence and setting yourself free.

People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves, they have the first secret of success

– Norman Vincent Peale

Relationships provide another fascinating reference source for understanding our underlying beliefs. When you’ve been exposed to unsuccessful or dysfunctional examples of relationship behaviour, especially during early childhood, these broken connections can set up patterns of repeated unhappiness that echo throughout life. Clearly, this is such an important area of human experience that it deserves our fullest attention and every opportunity to heal the emotional wounds.

A deeply-held belief that you are truly worthy of success can galvanise your efforts and lend a fierce determination to your ambitions. But, if you harbour reservations about your worthiness, you’ll accept every defeat and disappointment as evidence that you were never meant to succeed. And that’s the difference. It isn’t in the circumstances. It isn’t in the inevitable challenges and problems that arise in our lives. The difference is in your belief and attitude – either in favour of your success or in support of your willingness to quit in the face of obstacles.

In many ways, we can appreciate that belief is the distinguishing factor that either empowers your quest for success and fulfilment – or it becomes the dead weight that impedes your progress and buries the spark of your ambition.

The thing always happens that you really believe in;

and the belief in a thing makes it happen.

– Frank Lloyd Wright

When you examine your life with clarity and objectivity, you’ll quickly become aware of any areas where things are not working out to your satisfaction. Perhaps this is because these important areas have not received adequate time and attention from you. But they also provide important clues about your underlying attitudes.

This could be the ideal moment for you to consider a range of more suitable alternatives, more positive beliefs and empowering behaviours that will support your efforts for a happier and more fulfilling life. Perhaps this could be the best moment for to enjoy reciting a set of carefully-chosen, positive affirmations. There are countless examples available online for you to choose from. You can find affirmations that will apply to any area that’s giving you concern, from your career, your finances, your health, your relationships to your happiness and wellbeing.

A change in attitude can produce far-reaching effects in your life. Your belief system will drive your activities and shape your ability to persist in the face of resistance. When you open your heart to the possibility of love, you’ll be surprised at how quickly love shows up in your life. We could even say that what you’re looking for is already available to you. You just need to make yourself available to what you’re seeking.

When you develop yourself to the point where your belief in yourself is so strong that you know you can accomplish anything you put your mind to, your future will be unlimited.
