The Paradox of Belonging

The Paradox of Belonging

When it comes to leadership, what works for men doesn’t always work for women

One of the paradoxes women in leadership need to navigate while the Think Leader; Think Male stereotype prevails is the tradeoff between our competence as leaders and our likability as women, where what works for men doesn’t always work for women.

I sadly had to learn the hard way early in my career, and my confusion and sense of injustice around it nearly had me throw in the leadership towel.

So glad I didn’t. Watch here

Grit in the Oyster Podcast

A fascinating conversation with Dr Laura Kray of the Hass Business School at Berkeley, California where we explore the negative stereotype of women's competence and how it impacts negotiating. She talks about the research that demonstrates women are doing the same thing men do when they negotiate for themselves but it is experienced and judged differently, and what to do about it. From managing the beliefs you take to the negotiating table, self-affirmation, creating community and buffers, asking for others and most importantly, having that growth mindset that dials down our defensiveness. Yes, a fixed mindset is where stereotyping resides. Listen here

Travelling On the Path of Joni Mitchell by Ann Powers

As much as I have always loved her music, I have also been intrigued by Joni Mitchell as a woman, extraordinarily talented and fiercely independent.  Beyond her time on so many levels. This great biography by Ann Powers draws a rich, raw and fresh picture of the trailblazing woman that is Mitchell and she boldly explores the paradox of her - a great insight into women trailblazers generally.  Of course, Joni Mitchell is a music legend, but how did she get there? At what cost and how did she protect and manage her extraordinary talent and success, given the pressure on her likability?
