1. Background & Difficulties

The rail welds play a significant role in the construction of continuous welded rail (CWR) track, which directly determines the security of railways transportation. Both the welding flaws are generated by missing operation during welding process and fatigue damage from high speed trains and heavy load traffic. Therefore, the effective NDT methods are expected to decrease rail flaws.

Conventional ultrasonic flaw detection of rail weld mainly has the following problems:

  • The ultrasonic reflection signals of light spot and gray spot in the weld are weak, resulting in leak detection.
  • Coarse-grained structure for thermite weld leads to splitting of the ultrasonic beam.
  • Various UT probes need to be used for regional scanning according to different rail parts, leading to low testing efficiency.

2. PAUT Testing System

SIUI provides a PAUT testing system for rail weld. It includes a PAUT flaw detector with on-board rail software, a tandem scanning crawler, and customized PA probes and wedges.
