Perfumes are alive. You can see it evolve with your own eyes.
An experienced Beauty Advisor will tell a reluctant customer who tries a new perfume to "wait 30 minutes before making a final judgement on the scent" because the perfume evolves and unfolds. She is right.
The first time the industry popularized scent evolution was in the 40s. The concept of the olfactive pyramid was first introduced by a perfumer named Jean Carles a chemist. Carles was a pioneering figure in the fragrance industry, and his work helped to establish the modern practice of fragrance creation.
For 8 decades, the most used description of a scent has been the olfactive pyramid. A chemistry concept related to volatility.
Nowadays, the olfactive pyramid is widely used by perfumers, fragrance companies and retailers as a way of describing the different notes and accords that make up a fragrance, and how they evolve over time, (for those knowledgeable enough to understand the concept of volatility).
To interpret an olfactive pyramid, you should pay attention to how the fragrance changes over time. The top notes will provide an initial impression of the fragrance, but the middle and base notes will give you a better understanding of its overall character and personality. By decoding the different layers of the pyramid, the viewer can better understand the complexity of the fragrance and appreciate how it unfolds over time.
