Persona of someone who is not a great Scrum Master

Meet Sarah, a young professional who was recently promoted to the position of Scrum Master within her company. Despite her enthusiasm and drive to succeed, Sarah is not a good fit for the role of Scrum Master. In this writeup, we will examine the reasons why Sarah is not a good Scrum Master persona

First and foremost, Sarah lacks the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively lead a Scrum team. She has no prior experience working in an agile environment, and her knowledge of Scrum practices and principles is limited. As a result, she struggles to facilitate scrum events and guide the team towards achieving their sprint goals. Her lack of knowledge and experience also makes it difficult for her to identify potential impediments and take corrective actions to keep the team on the path of continous improvement.

Another area where Sarah falls short as a Scrum Master is in her communication skills. She has a tendency to be overly assertive and confrontational when dealing with team members, which often leads to misunderstandings and conflict thus creating a hostile team dynamics. Additionally, Sarah does not take the time to actively listen to the team's feedback or concerns, which creates a sense of disconnection and lack of trust between her and the team members. Effective communication is essential to the success of a Scrum team, and Sarah's inability to communicate effectively is a significant hindrance to the project/Product progress.

One of the core responsibilities of a Scrum Master is to identify and remove impediments that may hinder the progress of the team. However, Sarah does not have the necessary knowledge or experience to identify these impediments, making it difficult for her to effectively lead the team towards accomplishing the goals. She does not have a clear understanding of what impediments are and how to address them, which can lead to delays and decreased productivity for the team.

Moreover, Sarah lacks the emotional intelligence required to be an effective Scrum Master. She has a tendency to become reactive and emotional when faced with stressful situations, which can negatively impact team morale and productivity. A good Scrum Master needs to be able to remain calm and level-headed in the face of adversity, and be able to guide the team towards a positive outcome. Sarah's emotional reactions create an unstable environment and make it difficult for the team to focus on the Sprint Goals.

To add to that, Sarah's lack of coaching skills can lead to a lack of motivation and engagement among the team members. A good Scrum Master needs to be able to inspire and motivate the team towards achieving their goals. They need to be able to provide constructive feedback and identify areas where the team members can improve. Sarah's inability to effectively coach the team in these areas can lead to a lack of engagement and productivity, ultimately impacting the success of the project.In addition to her lack of coaching skills, Sarah's persona also exemplifies other traits like controlling people, being aggressive and defensive, that make her ill-suited for the role of Scrum Master. Coaching is a critical aspect of the role, and without it, the team members may struggle to understand and adopt agile practices. Organizations should carefully consider the qualifications and traits of potential Scrum Masters before assigning them to the role, to ensure the success of their agile ways of working

Furthermore, Sarah's position as a manager may create a sense of bias and hinder her ability to lead the team in an impartial manner. This can lead to the team feeling as though their needs and concerns are not being heard or addressed. Effective Scrum Masters need to be able to remain impartial without formal authority over the team and prioritize the needs of the team over those of the organization or their own personal preferences.Sarah's dual role as a manager and Scrum Master creates an inherent conflict of interest and makes it difficult for her to effectively lead the team towards achieving their goals. It is important for organizations to recognize the importance of separating these two roles in order to ensure the success of their agile ways of working.

To wrap up, Sarah's persona exemplifies why someone who lacks the necessary skills, knowledge, and emotional intelligence is not a good fit for the role of Scrum Master. Effective Scrum Masters are able to facilitate events, coach teams, communicate effectively, and remain calm in the face of adversity.
